First off, it's good to hear from you AG. Some of us were starting to wonder!
I hope you can return to The Vast at some point when RL permits, or at least consider enlisting some additional manpower (DMs). Many servers recruit directly from the player-base with a DM-application process, but I haven't seen that happen here.
The Vast has survived a lot of stormy weather over the years, granted. I think there are still many threads waiting to be developed and played out. It's just stifling for us players when there is no DM activity, especially a server that is so geared toward RP exp. The river has dried up, so to speak, and we players are like fish that have been left behind to suffocate in the dry air.
True enough Eventine1, The Vast needs some new life. Change is good; it helps us grow and measure the passage of time. Some new creature spawns would go a long way to help refresh things, and I'm sure it would be fun to introduce some new campaign material (Soooo much could be done with the tribe of Lizardfolk just outside the town...)
The Vast has always taken a sort of minimalist-approach, and the players have done their best to work within that. Still, some of us do yearn for more creative input. I'm just not sure if The Vast admins are willing to dedicate any time at present, or if they are willing to share leadership on some level to rekindle The Vast. Please let us know!
Expanding the DM cabinet and even working with outside builders/scripters would be a logical step towards a new future.
We've just got to be cool and level-headed while AG and the gang figure things out. We've all needed our time away, and that is good for our health. Yet, The Vast has a health of its own that is failing. This is a good time to make suggestions (in the appropriate forum and in a civil manner) and be heard, all ye who still care enough to see The Vast rise again.
Please remember to be positive and thankful to the real people who keep this PW running, even in this low period of activity. Thanks and I'll see you in-game.

Well, we are playing a game, that is very much long in the tooth (and it's successor looks to be too... much, to be of any use for the average gamer/scripter/builder/balding scripter/etc...

Eventine, you are correct I did ask everyone to post their thoughts here.
However I wanted to keep this discussion general and non topic specific. It is a place for us to discuss our concerns about the vast and its survival.
If you have suggestions on how to make the vast better, or things you would like to see, those posts belong in the suggestions discussion board, not general discussion.
I know that when it comes to the topic of the vast in general, and to our present status, emotions can run high (mine certainly do) However I would like to nip what could easily become a flame war in the bud right now.
Please keep posts curteous, positive, (yes you can offer constructive criticism and still be positive), and general (as in discussing things in a broad and general sense, no need to trudge up specific instances.) This is a place to voice genuine concern about the status of the vast as an active server, not to discuss ways to change it.
I would also ask that if you have suggestions on how to make the vast better you put them in their proper place.
That being said thank you to everyone who has posted and please continue to do so.
And on a more specific note, I will reiterate a personal feeling of my own in regard to our current server situation. For me personally the current feeling of stagnation has less to do with a feeling of needing something new, or more dm's, I have for a long time been an advocate of making your own fun, and still am, and when I've had enough folks on to form an adventure, we've had some great times all on our own, And I even got to see area's that were still new to me after 3 1/2 years on this server.
Personally it is about not knowing our future as a server, and the slow administrative pace. But these things have already been discussed, and AG has said when they have more information they will share it, so for now we just have to do the best we can and wait for more information.
So at that, I wish everyone happy vasting, look forward to seeing you online when you can make it, and give my regards to AG and the rest of the DM team in hopes that all is well with them.

imho
the vast is a great place to play, when i first found the vast i was so excited. I found a place that was more like PnP than anything else i could find. the folks here are genuine and i feel they do the best they can playing and helping others.
i have voiced my concerns to some of you, i think more feed back from the DM team is all we truly ask for. for some of us we feel kinda abandoned or forgotten about.( just a feeling we are getting )
life happens to us all, we know that. a word or two would go along way i think from the DM team. even just to say hey having some issues RW and we will get back to running the game as soon as we can or hey i need a break from it all i am burning. we have all been there and we truly understand. but the darkness and guessing and spectulation it makes it harder than it has to be.
AG and the gang just give us a light don't leave us in the dark. we all love what you and the others have done creating the vast. it is a huge part of our gaming experience and a great experience for those new folks learning what some of us have been doing all our lives. this is a hobby for me and i do take it seriously like others have said. this place is loved and respected by some many. don't let it die foolishly. imho

Re: Light
Just an FYI for everyone: we've never left our methods for choosing DMs open to the community to decide. We've always approached prospective DMs directly, and only because we were impressed by them over the long term. An open application process is essentially useless; anyone can say whatever they like on an online application. How would we know the truth of it? Only the secretive existence of a DM silently watching solo and party behaviour, general personality, and role-play skills can prove who might make a good DM.Guktron wrote:Many servers recruit directly from the player-base with a DM-application process, but I haven't seen that happen here.
No response is specifically needed to this, it's just information.
Please see http://www.nwnthevast.net for server information, guidelines, rules, and lore.
