tech question about chat logs
I can't for the life of me remember how to retrieve chat logs. >_< had a really interesting night RPing tonight, and would like to save the log, maybe to write a story based on it, at a later date.

Re: tech question about chat logs
something about changing the 0 to a 1, or was it a 1 to a 0.. I dont know, something about changing a number, at least that's what I remember when another person on another forum said... I think it was chat logs... *sighs*

Re: tech question about chat logs
no, not how to record them, I set that up a long time ago....was trying to find WHERE they are stored.

heh, but thanks. I remember how to stop logging the chat now.

Re: tech question about chat logs
Under Main NWN directory, look for folder "logs". There is one text file within that is labelled clientlog1.

Re: tech question about chat logs
when I looked there, there wasn't anything. just an empty folder. *sighs* maybe it got changed back to not logging the chats somehow.

*thinks* umm....on second thought, can't remember how to change that chat log on again, after all.

Re: tech question about chat logs
In Main NWN directory, find nwnplayer.ini. Open with notepad and look for this line:

[Game Options]
Memory Level=1
Memory Access=1
TooltipDelay uSec=100000
Enable FloatyTextFeedback=1
Hide SecondStoryTiles=1
Single Player ItemLevelRestrictions=0
Single Player Enforce Legal Characters=0
ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=1 <-------------------
LogMyEmoteUsage=0
MouseoverFeedback=1
TextBubbleMode=1
TargetingFeedbackMode=2
Difficulty Level=3
Heartbeat Logging=0

change from '0' to '1'

Strange how that folder is empty, there should be two files, nwclienterror1 and nwclientlog1.

I suggest you change the number to 1, start a quick game, speak in the chat bar, exit and look. If the file is still not present, change it to 0, load NWN, do as above, exit then change back to 1 and try it all over again.

Re: tech question about chat logs
Once you do get it working, remember that the log file gets overwritten each time you start up a new NWN session. So be sure to copy or rename the file you wish to save.

Re: tech question about chat logs
thanks a lot guys. unfortunately, the log is empty. I logged in a few hours later, to see who all was playing, then remembered about wanting to save the log from my last game. when I finally found the chat log...... *sigh*

well, at least I know what to do next time.

Re: tech question about chat logs
IIRC, I 'think' TrooperMax made a small program that forced the file to not be overwritten. I could have misread what its purpose was. You'd have to ask TrooperMax.

Re: tech question about chat logs
Originally I had written a Java program:

www.smurfyone.com/archive...logkit.zip

But if you're running windows, you can just use this version:

www.smurfyone.com/nwn/uti...Logger.zip

All instructions should be included in there. It is manual, you have to run the program to save the log. (this allows you to apply some discretion in what you save)

Wrote those quite some time back...

There also look to be a few tools available from the vault:

nwvault.ign.com/View.php?...ail&id=823

That one is a .NET program that installs itself as a windows service and monitors your NWN log file and will automatically archive them. I've not tried it, myself. The one concern would be if the program is actively monitoring that file for changes, that could suck up a small amount of resources, but it may be possible that as a windows service it could tell windows to tell it when that file changes, in which case resourses used by the program would be extremely minimal. And there is the advantage of being automatic.

And then there's also:

nwvault.ign.com/View.php?...il&id=1045

Which is another .NET program for viewing logs and says it can filter out various types of lines (Talk, Tell, Party, OOC (//), etc), but I haven't used it myself, so I don't know how well it works. I had always been meaning to write some manner of logviewer myself or a program to generate an HTML version of the log, but just never got around to it.

Both of those are .NET programs, so you will likely need a recent version of the .NET framework.

Also, here's an excerpt from my ClientLogger readme:

--------------------------
For Enabling Chat Logging:
--------------------------

Go to your Neverwinter Nights folder (default= C:NeverwinterNightsNWN)

Locate nwnplayer.ini and open it

Look underneath the [Game Options] heading

If you see a line "ClientChatLogging=1", then you are already logging your client conversations!

If you see a line "ClientChatLogging=0", then you should change the 0 to a 1 to log your client conversations.

If you do not see either of the above lines, then you should add on another line anywhere under the [Game Options] heading, not under any other heading, that says "ClientChatLogging=1".

You might also make sure that there are no duplicate lines for ClientChatLogging, as only one of them will take effect and any duplicates will likely have no effect.

Once you have enabled logging, Neverwinter Nights will log your dialogue to a file called "nwclientlog1.txt" under "logs" directory in your NWN directory (for ex: C:NeverwinterNightsNWNlogs
wclientLog1.txt

Also note, patch 1.64 added another option to log all dialogue even if you have it filtered in game, for example if you filter shouts out of your dialogue pane in game, it can still log those shouts to the output file. To have it do this, make sure there is a line "ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=1" as above with "ClientChatLogging=1", if it is there then you are good for this, if it is there but set to 0, change it to 1, if it isn't there at all, add it anywhere under the [Game Options] heading. I found that this option logs everything from all types of dialogue, to server messages, to combat info! Everything will be logged with a prefix "[CHAT WINDOW TEXT] ", then normal dialogue that shows up in your conversation pane will be logged with no prefix. This means that normal conversation in your pane will be logged twice, once with the prefix, once without, a little messy, but blame BW, I do think it is neat to be able to log combat info.

Another option I noticed "LogMyEmoteUsage=1" (I trust you're getting the hang of setting these options by now). This option seems to log your usage of the default Bioware radial emotes. For example, if you bow, it will output "[EMOTE] ** Bow **" to the log file. This only logs your emotes, not other people's emotes, so isn't really that neat, but perhaps a little neat.
