About horses

Post by Ali Akabba »

If there are feats and skills associated to horse riding, how will this be dealt with in regard to older characters?

I guess that's a valid question, regardless if we're going to use horses soon or not.

The horse feats are given automatically when you log in to the server. You won't need to do anything at all.

Well there are three horse feats.
Mount Actions - Which everyone gets.
Mounted Combat - Prerequisite 1 ride. Allows you to make a ride check every round to increase your AC by 1 for every 5 ranks.
Mounted Archery - Prerequisite 1 ride and Mounted Combat. Reduces the range combat penalty from -4 to -2.

Not that I think we will be getting horses... but still. Just saying that the second two "new" feats will not be given out.

Is Mounted Combat a feat or a skill? Your post mentions ranks.

Nevermind, I just made a test character. Mounted Combat and Mounted Archery are feats, while there is also a Ride skill. Anyone can take them, but you need one rank in Ride skill to take Mounted Combat. Old characters should be able to take these at any level-up.

Thats a feat. Go ahead and make a test PC that is a fighter going for Purple Dragon Knight... thats how I found out about this.

Basically the two Horse Feats which you can select upon level up are Mounted Combat and Mounted Archery.
Mounted Combat allows you to use your Ride skill to increase your AC while mounted.

I am just going to repost info from nwn wiki.

I've also found that the minute I mount a horse, it gets very laggy for me, especially at a run. Also, when you die, your horse goes to the Fugue with you.

Ah. These feats don't seem to be essential, except to some character specialised in fighting mounted, so I guess it's fine to go without them.

The lag issue doesn't sound very good, though.

I'm arranging temporary IC testing of horses with the odd PC here and there while we figure out this whole horse business.

After trying out the horses on my test module, I found that when smaller races mount up, the horses shrink to match the character's scale. This happens with the default Bioware horse system. Two problems presented themselves at this point - First it is kind of silly, and secondly the highlighted aura around the horse stays the same size. So when you hit Tab, you have an oversized ghostly outline on top of the smaller mount. You can make small sized horses, but additional scripting will be needed to restrict riders of the wrong size from mounting the animal. I found that you can disable the highlighted aura altogether by changing the appearance.2da entry. The last column in each entry is the "Targetable" setting. Switch the default value from 1 to 0 and the highlight will go away. You can still affect the horse with mouse commands, just no aura. Then I just moved the modified 2da file into the override directory.

There is an HTML guide with all this good horse stuff, and some info about scaling creatures here:
