Question Regarding Desease and Lowered Ability Scores

Question Regarding Desease and Lowered Ability Scores
Ok, these are OOC newbie questions but I must ask because I am unfamilliar with how these things work on The Vast:

1. Will desease go away on its own? Ganyja has been unfortunate enough to become deseased and while he has rested to full health the desease will not seem to go away. If not, I would assume that the only options are finding a cleric or paying the 80gp to the healer to have her remove it.

2. Once the desease is gone do lowered ability scores go away on their own? If not I take it that the only way to restore them is by a potion of restoration, paying a healer 200gp to have her restore them or by finding a cleric that can cast restoration.

Re: Question Regarding Desease and Lowered Ability Scores
I don't know any of this for sure, so this is only how I think it works, based on what I have heard in dark corners.

Disease: I don't think you can sleep it away, but besides the healers house, there is clerics (and there are plenty on them) and other characters that can heal.

Ability scores: Again clerics, restoration and other PCs (if it's poison, then getting out the poison and sleeping should do the trick.

Re: Question Regarding Desease and Lowered Ability Scores
try medicine bag or the healing kit from the ranger camp to remove disease and/or restore ability scores

Re: Question Regarding Desease and Lowered Ability Scores
Poison goes away after one minute (though it's better neutralized before it runs its course), and its ability damage is temporary and healed when you rest. Disease is much nastier... I don't actually know if the ability damage for it goes away, though I believe it is supposed to. It has never gone away on its own for me, and I would recommend you buy a medicine bag and remove the disease yourself if you can (and keep the bag for more such situations!), then pay a healer to heal the ability damage caused by it.

re:
After being diseased myself, the medicine bags are the way to go. I actually just used the normal "heal" ability to get the job done, and it worked wonders.

Essentially, if you want to be able to get rid of disease, either have some points in your heal ability, or carry the medicine bags, which give you a +3 when you use it, I think.

I was fortunate enough to resist the ability damage this time around. But for disease, you don't recover from that. You'd have to pay for a restoration from a healer.

Poison is a much easier bag. A good night's rest will cure an ability damage. Again, healing to remove the poison is possible, and recommended before resting.

Re: re:
Many poisons and diseases have both primary and secondary effect hits. The first occurs when you first become affected, and may include ability drains. The second comes a couple of minutes later and may include further ability drains. Saving throws are typically applicable to both primary and secondary effects.

You can save yourself the trouble of taking the secondary hit if you cure the poison or disease after the the primary hit, but before the secondary. Curing the ability drains is another matter, depending on the affliction.

Re: re:
Not that I know. There really isn't much documentation on the various diseases and poisons.

Re: .
Hi ya! [smiles, waves] I'm not 'completely' sure about this. But the DMFI wand pack that lots of DM's use has a neat wand called the 'rod of affliction'. When used it actually 'lists' all the diseases and posions that can be placed on a character or NPC. I think their's a text list. It's has some info on saves, and what diseases do what and how many saving throws need to be met, and what damage is done, and if it's recoverable. I 'think' it might be contained in the wand pack's readme...I can't recall.

As far as 'what' does 'what'. I think it lists the monsters that inflict it, or some of the names are easy to come up with. Like Slaad can infect you with a disease...kind of potentially nasty too, and has the potential to kill you outright. Other diseases like Mummy Rot, don't even give you the 'chance' to make so many consecutive saving throws to throw off the disease, they just stick around until a remove curse spell is cast I believe.

It's a little fuzzy, my memory, on this, sorry I could not be of more help.
more OOC chatter
Breif summary (OOC) of what the giant water beetle disease did to me and how I got rid of it:

Inflicted.....succesful secondary save
Rest....failed save....-1 int, wis, cha
Rest....succesful save....dmg ability stayed
Rest....sucesful save.....dmg abilty stayed
Rest.....failed save....-1 int, wis, cha (total -2 now)

(here is when I realized I wasn't going to be able to "sleep it off" and I logged out to post here, then went to work, went out for St. Patrick's day....came home and logged in)

somehow the disease was gone so there must be a time limit or St. Patrick (read Tymora) was smilling on my character that day, but the ability dmg remained

luckily enough a group of people had come to the healer's house to get someone raised and there was a cleric among them who was able (and kind enough) to cast restoration on me

Thanks again to those that posted here and helped me in game with this, didn't like RPin a diseased hin
Yes there is, it is a fun wand. It is also where I get much of my information on poisons and diseases - that and directly out of the scripts. Bioware however has left NWN pretty much undocumented where things like that are concerned.
