So, I had an idea I wanted to ask the DM's and the Community

Post by Rolock »

Hi ya. [smiles, waves]

So with all my fevered rambling in suggestions about item creation, and AG's response about DM supervised things, got me to thinking. I'd like to try my hand at creating a wonderous item. Gloves, specifically. Now, Sena's currently a level 4, so I felt it should be a sufficiently low level item. I might even wait until my next level, but I wanted to ask the DM's and get community feedback too. I'll post something IC in the IC forum, if I get permission to try this, of course, but right now, this is OOC. [smiles]

I was trying to think of something suitable to try my hand at creating, so I thought about it for a while. I wondered about gauntlets of ogre power. I had that idea, because I know the northern areas have some ogres now, and I thought it would be the 'perfect' oppertunity to utilize this 'newish' creature. Then, I thought...no...ogre gauntlets are a bit too 'powerful' for me. I am after all only a level 4 character. So I thought...well...what about Lesser Gauntlets? Those only give a +1 to str, but are still sufficiently 'neat' to make an item.

Then I thought, well, I wonder if their is already an item like this for 'sale' somewhere in a shop, as I've not explored 'everywhere'. So, if their 'is' I'll stop right now, as I didn't want to reproduce something already available, as I wanted something not on the server, not 'overpowered', something of interest, and something whose creation might stem from roleplaying. [smiles]

But I'm assuming it's not on the server, so I'll continue. So you might think, well what do ogres have to do with ogre power gauntlets, even lesser ones? Well...I didn't want to just 'get' gold together, prepare a bull's strength spell and have the requisite experience on hand then have a DM oversee the creation. I wanted to 'really' gather the materials and have some roleplay in the process. So, I read the description of the regular gauntlets in the DMG and it said they they are heavy leather gloves with metal rivets stitched into each knuckle. So I thought about what 'kind' of leather. And I had a great idea. What if these gauntlets need the actual 'tanned' skin of an ogre? Not the entire skin, that would be too big, but some of the skin, turned into gloves?

So we'd need some sort of raiding party, to be put together seek out the ogres, have some sort of conflict, possibly while taking care against orcs as well, and defeat an ogre.

Now I think this is a good idea. [smiles] I have the experience of course, I don't have 'quite' the amount of gold I'd need, I believe I only have 1/3 of the current cost to make them. But I thought I might:

A. work with two 'other' wizards perhaps, and split the cost three ways. Depending of if the gloves sell, I'd then split the profits with them.

B. Find a non-arcane backer(s) willing to put up the 2/3's cost in gold. I'd then split the profits with them, or if they wanted to purchase the gloves outright, they could simply make up the entire cost, plus what it costs to sell.

All of the above can all be done IC, and worked out later.

Lastly, I wanted to ask the DM's.

A. If it's permissable to do this, and would you be agreed to oversee creation? Craft Wonderous Item is a feat you need to be at least 3rd level to take, so I could technically do this now at level 4, but if you'd rather I wait until level 5, I'll abide by that call. [smiles]

B. I'd like to ask the player community their thoughts on ogres. Would this be feasible to confront them, with a party? Should 'I' wait until level 5, or would it be reasonable to go. Also, would anyone (OOC) be interested in this endeavor? [asks]

If I get positive feedback and DM permission, of course, I'll post something IC in the IC forum as I mentioned above.

Normally I play Thursday, Friday and Saturday: From 10 am - 5 pm. (10 am - 4 pm on Saturdays) All times in US CST. (Central).
I think it's a wonderful idea. I do not know if the DMs find a pair of STR +1 gloves too powerful, but I think that you've done a good preparation with good research, which I believe is something that is liked by the DM team... but they'll have to answer for themselves of course

And surely Ananiki would love to posses such a pair (and she has the coin), I haven't fought any ogres yet though, but I guess she wouldn't mind trying one - and it could prove interesting to have her work together with 'witches' - wonder how long that would work out *snorts*

For the level part... Well I don't know how far you are from 5th, but I suppose, with all the RP and DM overseeing involved, it might not be 'unnatural' to reach level 5 before the creation is done.

(unnatural is a slightly odd word I believe, but I couldn't come up with anything else right on top of my head)

Well, I sorta don't like this idea..I don't think any PC should be able to make magic items..unless they are a very high level. Part of what I like about this server is the "very" low magic content. Magic items should be awe inspiring, have a "history" and be given out by dm's for specific purposes.

If the making of magical items is going to be allowed, I would suggest that the DM's provide the motivation for the items, instead of players picking something they want to make then try to make it. What I mean is, DM's could leave special plot items about that hint at what could be made and, hopefully the players will be able to figure out what to do with them...

Just my 2 cents...
I agree, PCs should not make items (especially items that are permanent like that -- your intentions are probably all well and noble, but not everybody is). However, it does bring up a good point... if the PCs can get DM interaction, on a quest for components and ingredients, for one of the NPC characters/mages to make. The DM would have DIRECT control over every one of the items creation, and could make the quests suitably difficult, making certain items, deemed too out of balance, impossible (were-shark blood, for example). They could even make items of a truly vile nature, require truly vile acts (like elf blood <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> )
DMs would have control over any of these kinds of items in any case. Such a quest would be rare, and never left to scripting. Any item creations are not likely to happen soon, and will require the PC to be of higher levels than is stated in the DMG, or wherever.

Agreed. [smiles] Since I posted my first ideas in the suggestion forum, I've come to dislike the idea of 'scripted' permenancy items. So 'much' can go completely wrong, especially as the scripts get larger and more complex. [smiles]

I fully understand your feeling about higher levels being required. Thank you for your response to this. [smiles]
