something I saw that really bugged me

Post by Dracharla »

Today I was playing and having a blast myself, although I think it's been a rough few days for isendyl (for a whole host of reasons) well one of them was that ignus died and she saw his body in the graveyard today.

then something happened that really aggrevated me as a player. someone in an effort to play a joke on Isen, took Ignus's body and dumped it in the middle of the road next to ralbons. then spent the next at least 15 minutes putting about 50 bullets all around his body. this really irked me for 2 reasons. 1 that many items on the ground in helps contribute greatly to lag issues. and second this was done in broad daylight in plain view of guards. Guards who if they were being manned by dm's or weren't constrained to being NPC's in a game would have certainly stopped such a grievous defilement of the dead. This just irked me because it was done to be funny ooc but it broke the illusion for me. It was someone taking advantage of game mechanic limitations to do something that I viewed as being stupid. I thought it was in poor taste and horribly bad role playing.

maybe i'm being to narrow minded or I can't take a joke but I just thought this was very uncool. then when I try to make something of it, by picking up the body and taking it back to the graveyard (well actually shara's) i'm accused of "defiling it" and several innaprrioate questiosn are asked of isendyl. I guess i'm just kind of dissapointed and frusstrated by the whle thing. but I'm tired maybe i'll feel differently in the morning.

If you were there please post your thoughts and even if you weren't feel free to. this just frustrated me greatly and seemed to be a very out of place act for the vast which usually has such excellent roleplayers.

i dunno why i posted this i guess it just frustrated me and I wanted to vent/share my frustrations and see what other people thought.
Well, I will confess and say that my character was responsible for this, and it was done for ic reasons.

First, I would like to say, no it was not done in broad daylight, the action happened in the middle of the night, it was only discovered at day light, and I was very quick about it, and did it shadows (stealth mode) wearing black, and knowing I could get caught. And also, the design had less than 20 bullets, and I always clean up bullets after my designs have fulfilled their purpose.

Second, at first I had just come across the body in the cemetery and moved it to Shara's. However, my charatcer, was standing by the well and heard various characters openly speaking ill of Sul when was not there to defend himself. Sul is one of the few characters on the vast my character respects. When the characters started accusing Sul of stealing the body, then my character backtracked and moved the body into plain view, a little off of the road, as they argued at night. She also moved another body to the pond. The one by the pond she gave angels wings out of bullets, the one by the road she gave a devils tail and pitchfork.

This one done because, first of all, if the body was moved while they were arguing with Sul, then they couldn't accuse him of moving it. Second, she had found ic many of their actions hypocritical and did not like the three characters ganging up on Sul. Third, the design was supposed to be ironic because (from my char's perspective) the dead characters were talking about him with reverence as if his life was worth more than Sul's.. so the statement was more or less that in death, Ignus could be sainted or demonized according to how he was portrayed, and perhaps there was as much or as little truth in the design as there was in the words of his companions. Also, the angel wings were put around the body of the gnome since while his friends made a big deal about Ignus, they didn't mention the fallen body that lay next to him. Again it was supposed to be ironical.

Furthermore, my character saw irony in the dead being treated better than the living, which is exactly why she made the point she did with her drawings. It was not supposed to be just a joke or an exploit, ideally the guards would have noticed it at first light and made a commotion. No such thing as bad publicity. She also witnessed a lot of hypocrisy that evening and wanted to make a point. In any case, it was left in plain sight where it would be found, and it was supposed to be an aggressive statement about defiling the dead in respond to what my character regarded as defiling the living.

In any case, there is more IC justification behind this that can be found out ic, but I stand by the act. It was not just a random vandalism or joke. I hope this puts to rest any concerns, though I will be happy to clarify.
it makes a bit more sense now, although my sleep is probably preventing it from making sense completely, I still have a couple issues, but I'll drop you a /t in game rather than waste more space on the boards. i think there was just some things that probably could have happened through /t's to clarify things after this happened that didn't. oh well such is life.

I have an evil connection at my school and get irked when i see things left laying around because lag is a huge issue for me. but like i said i'll /t you next time I see you in game.

thanks for the explanation.

I like how you don't refer to your connection as bad, laggy, highly latent, undependable, or anything like that, but evil.

Can I have that leftover tail and pitchfork?

There is one thing I didn't really understand behind all this, so I obviously missed something important here. What made you think that someone was targetting Isendyl specifically with that?

I can empathize with the original poster here.

I was dealing with an unusual amount of lag yesterday. Even with less people on than normal. I am not saying that the bullets laying on the ground caused it entirely, but I am sure that it would not help either.

Please take into consideration other players on the server before anyone starts laying items on the ground. They contribute to lag directly. I know it has been said before but it seems that it needs to be reiterated.
Clarify a couple things

Post by Vetigipher »

Thought I'd chime in, though typically don't here.

Suul, I think you might have missed the point about dropping the body and bullets on the road. I'd assumed whoever did it was stealthy, but the fact remains that NPC guards patrol there constantly, and even if they could not see the char., they would have noticed a body appearing from under a cloak, and done something, probably spotting you. I think that's reasonable to assume, if you play as if NPCs are actually living when not possessed by DM's. Playing as if NPC's are roadbumps unless they're talking actively really does ruin the illusion for me. *shrugs* Of course, in those situations, best chance of me maintaining my fun is to just walk away and find something I enjoy.

Also, in the interest of fairness, want to clarify some of the discussion that occurred around Sul~Falaer, which you refer to. Your char. was not aware of what had happened immediately prior to 3 of us walking to the well, discussing Sul. There was a reason for that discussion beyond gossip. There was no ill speaking, facts were stated. There were also varying levels of emotion within all the characters in that conversation, worth noting IC, I think, who expresses what, exactly.

I understand that IC your char. will have a lopsided view of things based on who they like/dislike, but I think if you're going to discuss in-game conversations or observations here, it's worth talking about facts over perceptions around an event.

To be true, Sul brought up the topic of a body moving, and threw out the first accusation (that is just like that guy...).

As far as your thoughts on respecting the dead over Sul, I wish you'd had Regret speak about that, Cair would like to understand your character better (doesn't respond much), could have been a great conversation

Hopefully the whole conversation didn't scar IRL Sul emotionally too much, seems like a decent guy in private tells.
Playing around the NPC's is actually very difficult... How many of my brawls would have gone as far as they did, had the guards been "real"?? Not many I suppose... and I guess I would be rushing the bars once in a while. That being said, I'll jump in your shoes and say "yes" one should always consider how the NPC'll react to your actions, it kinds of make the place more alive... it's one of the very tough parts of RPing (IMO) but then again, as with many of the tough RP parts, it's worth it all the way down...
So, what, would you rather the body be taken somewhere remote, like Dragon Dale Wood? Sheesh, at least you all could find it, where it was placed. *note: Es un chiste, a joke, a comment made with humor in mind.

Again, several interactions 'wouldn't' happen if the guards were taken into account. Falcon and Corvus could never have tossed Pye into the barn (wish that guy would come back, he was great). Ananiki wouldn't smack people up, and people wouldn't really be able to walk inches from another person, growl in his/her face, and expect to be ignored by the passing guard. Yes, we maintain a certain level of realism here, but there are some things that have to be overlooked. I don't believe the placement of the body was meant to be a slight against a particular character. However, it did make a very strong point. The character moving the body had something much deeper in mind when doing so, as opposed to just "Watch me creep out the Dale folks."
And do the bullets really contribute to lag? I've never had that problem, but my connection is usually pretty good. If so, then I'd agree, the bullet art will have to stop, or at least be done in more remote locations, but only because it would be more practical for it to be done so, considering the limitations of some players' connections.
*drops a coin in the bucket, spends several minutes looking about for another and forgets what he was going to say.*

As far as I know... increased lag, was probably due to the server having been up continuously for a few days, more than the bullets (although they would not help). Seem to remember AG saying something about lag getting worse when the server isn't reset for a while.
