well i guess
My honest thoughts about this as a player are from a completely ooc standpoint and just have to do with common human decency, implamenting them IC would be tricky and you'd have to think of something. *disclaimer finished you may all flame now*

I think you should stick only to light/minor traps. Things that won't kill anyone even little level ones. (at least for now) ok well maybe it will kill a mage but heythats the price of having 4 hp....

I also think you should put them in areas haunted more by elder characters like the mhyrwood forest or near the warrens, or north of the dale.

my thinking for these things is basically this. I want a realistic game thats why I play on the vale, but I also know what its like to be new to a shard and feel like people are out to get you.. player laid traps are pretty much exactly what that is.

kind of going against what i said earlier but anyways...

i would suggest traps that could do a fair bit of damage but not klll anyone (for the time being at least if someone wants ot sacrifice a char at some point for the purpose of story *shrug*) but put them in places where our little newbies won't get killed.

Its hard enough being a new player on the vast and getting killed by goblins every 16 minutes. the older players don't need to add to the frustration.

just my thoughts
Echoing, Dracharla. I think you're entering the realm of Pvp and PKing, which requires DM approval.
Agreed...
which is why, now that budo has leveled is where DM interaction becomes more important...

Re: Traps
I'm not exactly sure what this traps thing is, but do not lay random traps without first talking to a DM, and having their cooperation in the matter.

Any player who is killed by a trap that another player set will be counted as an illegal, OOC PK, and the trap setter will be the one we'll go to, and we won't be smiling.

Playing an evil character properly on a persistant server is difficult, and more complicated than just causing random destruction, and proclaiming that you're evil (we see plenty of badly played evil, and only rarely do we see it played well). You should talk to a DM, tell them what types of things you have in mind, and see what is possible and what is not possible. It makes the playing of evil a bit more difficult, and requires more patience, but the rules are there for good reason.
well...it's not quite pure 100% octane evil....-
just more dramatic RP... or my intent.

*sigh* well since this is getting beyond my original ideas...

But, what -or- i how do play him as a threat to the town...when he is effectively given dentures made of Nerf teeth? since this is a trickier minefield to disarm than i initially thought, lets drop the random traps for random traps MO sake for now.
Sorry to say it, but you don't. There is simply no threat posed by a single second level PC. Between the other PCs and the NPCs, creating a direct threat is pretty much impossible (which is why we have monsters and NPCs that threaten the PCs).

Erm please don't strike me down in game AG. I wuv you!

but i thought PW had a pretty good idea with the cows. by killing off the food suppl;y (or at least the readily available one in town) when we are having trouble getting to other settlement, alot of trouble could be found. I think Psi is right though playng evil, even mentally unstable evil is difficult. I think budo has potential, the unpredictable evil can be the worst, just look at the joker in Batman but it also takes ALOT of planning ooc. I think the traps were a neat idea, yo just need to work alot witht he DM's to make sure it doesn't get out of hand and become more trouble than its worth.

just my thoughts
Traps and Evil
The problem here is the incident in when Player 'X' is out hunting, patrolling, whatever you want to call it, gets his/her rear end handed to him/her, and starts high tailing it back to the Dale at near death status. Player 'X' hits snare/spikes and gets held by the trap and beat on/killed outright by the spikes. As stated above, that qualifies as a PK. While the character might do something like randomly lay traps in hopes of harming others, there are some things we just can't do within the confines of the server.

Evil-

Difficult to play? Yes.
Why? Well, it's hard to be deliciously evil, stay IC, and still not give yourself away to the righteous majority of the PC's. Furthermore, it's hard to be "dangerous" or a threat, for two reasons (offhand).

1. Slow leveling means you'll likely not catch some of the higher level good characters, who could, in all reality, easily hunt down Dr. Evil and beat him to death with fish (since that's popular, these days...)

2. We already have plenty of evil established. Goblinkin, Bandits, Orcs, Drow. DROW. D-R-O-W. It's kind of hard to measure up against an enemy as cunning, intelligent, and skilled as the drow.

I'm probably repeating points already made, but it's early and I'm not cognizant enough to care .
It was not a bad idea per se, but farmer Harner's cows do not constitute the town's source of food. In a medieval, agrarian society, the eating of beef is a very rare thing.

It is nothing like what we have today with thousands of cows meeting the business end of a sledge hammer in slaughtering plants around the country, their neatly packaged dead flesh mysteriously and anonymously finding its way to local markets for general consumption in a way most devoid of any connection with the true and natural cycle.

No sir, these rare and valuable cows live their pampered lives devoted to producing milk and cheese (Harner's Cheese!) while the local populace dines upon grains and vegetables, supplemented by fresh venison - venison that has not consumed a cow's fat and greedy share of the product of valuable farmlands, but has grown in juiciness and tenderness in the most natural and sustainable manner by foraging in the wilds until making its way to the dinner plates of Commoner #2, and Commoner's Wife #4. No sir, these were no mere modern eatin' cows!
