Upcoming Street Fair

So! Goatte and I were talking a while ago about the Street Fair. We've been hoping to give it a little kick in the pants for a while (this was why Karn asked the Collegium to handle the organizing). However, the Fair is a community effort; the idea-tossing cannot remain private, nor can total responsibility for putting on the show. With that in mind, I hope everyone who has some interest will help out and discuss a second Fair.

Here are some ideas I hoped folks might like - most of them are pretty obvious, or were going to be used anyway, but I hoped we could all flesh them out.

1) Open market and some space for bards to perform. I think this may be a staple of a proper Street Fair. Who's up for it?

2) Melee Competition. This is in addition to the market and performances. I think we decided a while back to do this anyway, but I'm not sure we ever fleshed out exactly what it would be. The main thing is, do we want this to be actual sparring or just folks whaling on a combat dummy?

Sparring could be pretty dangerous, but it will be easy to tell who wins (since the loser will be knocked out and all). Combat dummies are much safer, but we will need a way of determining the winner. Will we base the competition on attack roll or damage dealt? Will we award give points for certain ranges of numbers (like one point for a roll of 5-10, 2 for a roll of 11-15, etc.?). What does everyone think?

We are going to need a prize for the winner, too; any thoughts? Offers? Regardless of what the competition becomes, hopefully folks will like it enough to enter.

3) Mage competition. Isn't it about time the mystical types had some fun? How about a small counterspelling contest to lead up to the melee competition? A few arcanists could pair off in elimination matches and toss non-damaging spells at each other in turns (shooting Magic Missiles back and forth could result in some unfortunate and unsightly burns) until one mage fails to counterspell. This is goatte's idea, and I thought it would be cool to take a crack at for once: I think we may just have enough wizard characters to put on a nice game. What does everyone think of this concept? Should it be changed or scrapped?

If we do this, we'll probably need another (minor?) prize for whoever wins. I also hope a very smart person will come up with a way to keep such a competition going once contestants run out of spells. It might get awkward to be forced to pause for ten minutes after every round so the winner can rest before facing the next challenge. (Or it might not! Maybe it will provide us all time for more bardsong and a chance to grab another drink at the Reach. Whatever we think would work.)

4) When? It seems pretty clear that it's not happening this weekend; school will be starting for a bunch of folks (or at least college students), and it could very well be that the server will get quiet-like for a while. As a small proposal, I would like to suggest that we throw the party on September 10th, the first weekend after Labor Day. Will many people be available to shake the ground that day?

It is late and I probably need sleep. I hope folks will be good enough to discuss this.

I think what we ran into on the first street fair I remember, is the dart competition taking so long that everyone had to leave or drifted away before the combat dummies could be used. Now the dart competition was a great lot of fun for both participants and spectators, but I wonder about trying to get too many things going.

Would we want maybe two venues going on at the same time? Archery going on in one spot and melee in another, far enough away so that conversation did not overlap?

I like the idea of the mage competition, that sounds like it would be fun to watch, like a fireworks display, especially if the competitors RP to the max.

I think the bards have always gotten slighted a bit on time. Maybe a break between competitions would be a good time, when people settle back for a moment to drink and listen. I think if the bards have a song or story prepared ahead of time it could move along and be a lively part of the ongoing events.

As far as prizes go Kris is still up for offering a prize for the Melee competition. I know there are some other smiths out there now also who may want to jump in, good advertising opportunities to be had. I am guessing there are bowyers who could make arrows or bows for that and maybe the mages could have something special from the collegium. I have thought about a prize dealing more with prestige that would require DM help. In some ways I think this would stand the winners better than just giving a weapon. A golden Torque, cloak, feather or pin. I don't know, it just seemed to be something more of a prize than just another normal or MW item made in game.

Time and timing and everyone's schedules really killed the second fair. We had some fun but it was a very thin crowd through much of it.
I think this will always be the challenge since we, as players, are scattered around the world and many in school or work.
The last big fair (the one with the dart competition) in the Landing was a little crowded. Don't get me wrong - it was lots of fun - just a little crowded. There was so much text floating in the air it was pretty hard to keep up with who was saying what.

What about, instead of a street fair, we have a fair in a nice big field where people can spread out and text from one event won't overlap with text from another. I've never been to Zato's school, but if there is a field around there, that might be a good spot. There was something mentioned in another post about there being a sparing area (subdual damage only) in the school. That could possibly be used for the melee competition. Also was wondering if that area would have any effect on spells? A subdual damage area where mages could really battle it out would be cool (like at the mage fairs described in tMoF, but I don't know if that is possible.

I just think a space where we could spread out a bit would be nice. Also would be a good bit of advertising for the school. Plus would warm up that cold and lonely eastern portion of the map.
As far as the mage competition goes, there isn't alot of 'fireworks' when a spell is successfully counterspelled. The two mages would just sync up and go thru the gestures etc. Something else to consider would be the potential for lag if we have multiple casters tossing spells around (assuming we get a good turnout).

The melee competition could be done using the 'subdual only' widget/token thing provided by a DM (I saw this in use outside of Dragon Dale when two orckin decided to duke it out). I believe Kris mentioned that he could supply the prize for this one.

I'll just go ahead and say that I can't make it the 10th. But weekends are going to be hectic so I wouldn't be around til after the 17th anyway.

As for ideas....if we did want to do an open plain, there's the fields in North Dale (sort of near the dragon bones). Zato's school is surrounded by forest, and is quite a trek to boot.

I think all the ideas sound great, and could be a lot of fun. (Though I don't know what goes on with a mage's counterspell). Maybe you could have one contest on Saturday, the other on Sunday.

For the sparring....some sort of subdual/contest with another person would be ideal, but dummies could work. Something like you said, assigning points, and you get 5 or so rounds of attack.

Also, the idea to spread it out some isn't a bad one...maybe some things could be going in inside the Reach (particularly performances, some selling...) while others are in the park proper. I do remember it getting pretty crowded last time.

Glad the ball is rolling.
just a thought I'd toss out.

If it was done at the school

a.) there is already an existing subdual system in place on the first floor.

b.) it can only fit so many people so most other things (bard singing, archery, selling of items, drink vendors etc) would have to likely be done outside of the school in the arbeck wood/glen. thus also helping with lag.

c.) this would go well with all the recent talk about different organizations within the vast working together. holding a street fair at the school would certainly do that especially if the collegium is doing it. Plus its a good walk to the school and some folks may want to hire guards *cough cough maces guild idea cough cough* to escort them safely to the school especially considering they will be burdened with valuable items for sale. Also it'd just be nice to see people roleplaying out there in the arbecks area besides Zato and I

Woohoo! I think we've got enough ideas for two or three Fairs already.

On a somewhat more serious note, the melee competition can be done with sparring. Folks would be able to spar in a designated sparring area (like Zato's dojo) or using temporary subdual tokens. Using the subdual system also applies to spells, so it would be technically possible to have "safe" mage duels. I'm not sure how many know this, but the subdual system is not entirely safe and bug-free: there have been very rare cases in which people died while using the subdual system (maybe due to some trick in the way their HP was depleted), so if we decide to spar, contestants will have to be aware that they could wind up dead IC, or that they may accidentally kill someone else. It's an extremely uncommon bug, and I've never personally witnessed it, but if there's going to be a large fighting contest, it's a little more likely to happen just because of the number of fights.

Also, it looks like we may have an overload of contests for one Fair. I'm starting to think that even the melee and mage competitions might be too many. If this is true, how about we let the mage contest go for a while, and next Fair we can have an all-out magic duel instead of just a counterspelling contest? This will only work, of course, if enough wizards are willing to do it.

By the way, I like the idea of Zato's school too. It's not very centrally located, but everyone will be travelling in pretty much the same direction, so folks could go in groups if they liked. The road is also relatively safe most of the time, so more people can make it from the Dale than if we held it in Vesper. It also has lots of room outside, and perfect facilities for sparring and all that. On the other hand, we will have to bring food and drink on our back since we won't have taverns all over the place, and the size of the crowd the dojo can hold is a bit limited. It would be great if we could get the Supreme Monk's opinion on bringing the party to his house, though.

As far as time and timing goes: last time we spread the Fair over two days, but there was not much to keep people coming the second day and we mostly wound up chatting a little and going our separate ways. It would be cool if we didn't spread ourselves too thin this time. I think it might be a good idea to settle on a single day most people find reasonable and cover as much of the day as we can.

As far as a Counterspell contest... It is basicly a game of dice rolls. The only thing required for a successful counterspell is the spellcraft check to Identify the spell and either a dispell of the same level or greater than the spell being countered (Or its addtional counterspell). The roll for spellcraft is according to the manual: DC = 15 + the level of the spell. Also Specialists gain +2 and -5 to their specialized/prohibited school. Mages can only counterspell if they have the correct spell known and memorized, and there are not a lot of lvl 1-2 wizard spells countered by wizard spells that are not dispel. Because of this, this whole counterspelling thing can easily just be dice rolls and as such, requires no resting or even magic... which needless to say, does not sound very exicting to watch. Perhaps give a target dummy near the other spellcaster where a person can "cast targeting it" should a person fail his spellcraft?

The idea of mages duking it out in Subdual... I don't know, most of the mages on this server are of extremely low hp, and aside from Perado and the now forgotten Sena, no mage on this server has access to lvl 3 spells. I would think it might be an idea if there were certain rules also, perhaps even banned spells, like Ghostly visage, invisbility, Necromancy, and physical attacks.

I just don't know how a Mage competition would work out. Perhap, just to throw out another idea... Something that should capitalize on the wizard's thinking skills and spellcraft... perhaps somekind of Magical Obsical course or something...

I don't know, I wouldn't even know how to run a mage compettion even if it were not limited by NWN.

Spellcraft and Lore skill tests would be cool, Ringbearer, but we'd have to have heavy DM involvement, I think. Perhaps an item that emits spell effects and the contestant determines what the spell was? Or, an item that really challenges a character's lore skill? Name the maker of an ancient dagger or helm?

The target dummy would be interesting for the counterspelling. One thing to consider for counterspelling is that you have to have the spell being cast or a 'dispel' of some sort to block the casting. You're right that it wouldn't be very dramatic, since the spell in question just fizzles. Maybe we can save the Mage contest(s) for October/Halloween? And look to a melee contest for September? Especially, if we can get access to Zato's school or can arrange for a suitable area.

Oh, and Karn isn't hosting the Street Fairs, but he is definitely backing the cost of the prize(s) for the melee contest. It's just a little tricky keeping him separate from Faelar, who is a member of the Collegium. RL, it got to be too much for one person to try and run it all. Dividing the tasks among the Collegium made more sense for a bunch of reasons.
10 September is the date of the next Street Fair.
What's there? Straight selling and buying. Bards and other performers are heavily encouraged to attend. Listeners are heavily encouraged to drop some money 'in the hat.'

Mage Competition? Not till the October time frame. I suggested around the Halloween time frame to give us more time to set up a couple methods of competition.

Melee competition? I think we could benefit from access to Zato's school here. We need a separate thread for melee competitions, I think. This might happen in later September and allow us time to come up with specifics, prizes, etc.

At each of these competitions, we will probably have buying and selling occurring alongside.
Just to give a warning ahead of time:

I didn't see this coming, but my new apartment will be without internet for some time (I think I gotta wait three weeks. Maybe as time goes on something will change, but until then, I'm gonna be unable to play the game).

In either case, Isendyl is the other character with access to the school. She would be able to let players and such in, and Zato would trust her with running and upkeep of the School. So, if I would be unable to play on the 10th, Isendyl could feasibly have the school opened for the event. So it wouldn't be random, in my opinion.

Or, you can just opt to hold the melee contest outside, etc. But I just wanted to put the information out there. I was really hoping to make it, but it looks like events are simply not in my favor this time.

For the Street fair could we have Gambling as one of the options..

here are some ideas...:

Wheel of chance:
Players each chose a number between 1-20 or 1-100
The Wheel NPC generates a dieroll ....
Closest doubles..dead on Triple win.
Bet a limit amount if so or any limit.

Or you can play Bones...
each player rolls 2d6 or 3d6 and Highest...Winns Pot..

All rolls would be local Visible as always...

well, sarah would like to perform, but so far i've only got 3 songs as good as ready (not quite, but ...well, i'm not a song-writer).
just wanted to know if one song per hour would be okay......or is it too much? or too little? (got some other songs, but they need loads of work, and sarah's a very slow thinker).

any thoughts on how to intergrate her into the fair? and, if it's at zato's school, who will escort her there? volunteers are asked for, male, if possible.
