3E Crafting Discussion

We will be answering questions and discussing Vulcano's 3E crafting system in this thread.

First I will explain some crucial information on the system:

Crafting Skills

The basics of 3E crafting (setting your skills, viewing your skill choices, skill information, etc.) is accessed via your Bioware crafting radial menu; the crafting dialog you normally see when activating this button has been customized for 3E Crafting.

The first time you activate this menu, you will be prompted to assign each of the three Bioware skills (the ones that show up on your character sheet) to one of the eight available 3E crafting skills. Once you assign the three skills, there is no going back, so take the time to read the information given in the menu and make an informed choice.

You may assign your three Bioware skills to any of the seven available 3E skill choices, but once you do, your choices are permanent. Your skill choices, shown in no particular order, are:

1. Weapon Crafting
2. Armor Crafting
3. Blacksmithing - crafting tools and smelting ore and ingots
4. Tailoring
5. Jewellery Making
6. Leatherworking
7. Bowmaking

Note: Trap Making was removed as the eighth skill in this current edition of 3E, and you must reassign that skill to one of the other 3E skills instead. There is a dialog that explains the reason for the removal of Craft Trap.

All crafting skills require the use of the proper crafting station, you cannot craft just anywhere.

Crafting Feats

3E Crafting also allows the creation of magical potions, scrolls, and other items by choosing the appropriate feats. Through the default Bioware system, we already have Scribe Scroll, Brew Potion, and Craft Wand. 3E uses these options, but also adds some others.

Because there are no actual feats for the remaining crafting feats available in PnP, 3E makes use of feats that are available in NWN. Certain non-crafting feats have been assigned to do double duty with the 3E system. To gain the ability to perform one of the 3E PnP crafting feats, you must choose its correlating NWN feat.

The 3E feats and their correlating NWN feats are as follows:

1. Brew Potion: Uses Brew Potion feat.

2. Scribe Scroll: Uses Scribe Scroll feat.

3. Craft Wand: Uses Craft Wand feat.

4. Attune Gem: Uses the feat Spell Focus:
Transmutation, and requires a caster level of 1.

5. Craft Magical Arms and Armor: Uses the feat Weapon
Focus: Club, and requires a caster level of 5.

6. Forge Ring: Uses the feat Spell Focus: Abjuration,
and requires a caster level of 12.

7. Craft Staff: Uses the feat Skill Focus: Lore, and
requires a caster level of 12.

8. Craft Wondrous Item: Uses the feat Skill Focus:
Spellcraft, and requires a caster level of 3.

Note: Craft Rod: Not permitted; nothing remotely
similar to 3E rods in NWN.

Note: We currently employ Brew Potion and Scribe Scroll in the Vast, and are adding craft wand in a restricted fashion (you may need to belong to a group to have access to the crafting station). We are also considering adding Attune Gem. Currently, Brew Potion stations are only available to members of specific groups, or apprenticeships.

All crafting feats, except Scribe Scroll, require the use of the proper crafting station.

Gathering the necessary resources for crafting.

Crafting materials must either be gathered, or purchased. Crafting tools must etiher be purchased or made by a blacksmith.

Metals and Gems

-Ores must be mined out of minable rock.
-Ingots must be smelted out of ore by a blacksmith.
-Rough gems must be mined or found, and then cut into finished gems.

Mining is unskilled labor, anyone who can wield a Miner's Pick, can hack away at minable rocks.

Tailor's Supplies

-All tailor's supplies must be purchased. You will not be forced to raise sheep or silkworms, or harvest natural fibers.

Note: You will have to mine ore to smelt into ingots for smithing.

There are also a few very restriced Potion Brewer's Workbenches in game.

I'd just like to point out here that the Attune Gem 'feat' requires a caster level of 3, not 1.

According to 3E rulebooks, or did you read that in game?

I read it in-game, it's in the list of feats brought up in the Crafting Skills conversation... you get it when you click on the proper button in the PC's Special Abilities subradial. I've never seen gem attuning in PnP.

So this means that we can no longer modify the look of our cloth, as easily as we could before ??

Hi all :

I´m curious here, just made another PC and tried to give him the Skills ; Armorsmithing, Weaponsmithing and Blacksmithing.
But that proved difficult to do and I have not yet succeded.
From what I could tell the 3E crafting menu is a bit "dodgy".

Elaboration ;

Weaponsmithing did not once show up as a skill.

When trying to change Craft trap : only shows up to 4 ( yes up to, sometimes it only shows 3 ) choices, and none were the 3 I wanted.

It really seems like the script "forgets" to put all the options up for grabs, and it seems a bit unstable ( the options keep changing almost everytime you try to change the same skill

Only once did I manage to get the Armor and blacksmithing skill, but for the sake of testing I discarded them and tried again................*bluff called you loose*

So now I ask, is there a combination of skills you cant take ?

P.S something just hit me : is "weaponsmithing" the same as "craft weapon" ? If it is, then it still does not change the fact that changing "craft Trap" to "blacksmithing" or "armorsmithing" is hard if not impossible.

okay discard what I said above : ) I found the way to it :

change craft trap to blacksmithing, complete the progress and you are done.

encountered a weird bug though ; somehow when I struck gold the first time, it moved the 4 skill points I had given "craft weapon" to the "Concentration" skill. Odd huh

The conversation has proven to be a bit touchy when first assigning your skills. I'll be contacting Vulcano about this, unless he might care to comment here too.

If you just choose any skill that shows up, it will give you the option to say "no, I do not want this skill", and then it will send you back to the beginning to try resetting that skill again. Eventually, you will get the entire selection of choices.

Is anyone supposed to be able to wield a pick? Because it seemed to me that you had to have martial weapon proficiency to use the pick. Did I miss something?

..said that anyone who can wield a Pick Axe...so you will still need the Feat to cover the requirements...

That is correct, it will not be as simple as before (would everyone just automatically be a master tailor?).
