Vive La Europe - greetings from a Nomad

Post by Fergoose »

Greetings,

I am on the prowl for a new server and have stumbled across yourselves. The main appeal was your implementation of death. I'd really like to try a server where death is more than a minor inconvenience.

Anyway, I just have a few of simple questions if someone could be so kind? I am guessing that the DMs of this fair server are mainly/exclusively North American. Being in Europe I doubt I will bump into DMs much or even at all.

i) Is it likely that my chars (if I keep them alive) would be able to level and develop without a DM on hand to consider dishing out RP XP bonuses and such? Basically, are you likely to live long enough on this server to level at all through slaying monsters. (Goodness me, I sound frightfully PGer )

ii) As I am likely to be on at times when the server is not so busy, is it likely I could survive whilst adventuring solo?

iii) I read another post that spoke of sending someone a tell if you wanted to group up with them, but that DMs frown on this. I can understand why, the whole meta-gaming issue and so on. But say I was on and there were only 2 or 3 folk on the server. Would it be acceptable to send a tell? Would other players mind? Personally I would be all for it, for me enjoying yourself is the priority even if it involves the bending of rules. However, if it was a big No-No then I wouldn't do it.

iv) Is the server adopting the CEP and if so, when might that be. I have a quite speedy dial-up connection (no lag when I play) but the thought of downloading the CEP (would take 7 hours) makes me want to weep.

Thanks for any feedback

Fergoose

PS please excuse my first character, I only made him very quickly to see if the server had any hak-packs or anything like that. Frankly, he is a mess

oh and two more...

iv) is there a cheaper easier way to heal than pay the 100 gold to the healer (a bit steep for my dwarf which just got 4 gold for a quest ) How do players go about healing? I haven't seen a half decent healing potion.

v) is it okay to go killing Stags (for food) in the main village, or should I go hunting somewhere more remote? This poor druid saw me doing this and just about had a fit

Post by Saxjamm »

I'll try to answer you questions in a general manner, in no particular order.

Healing is hard. There are no cheaper methods. This was done to give the server that difficult, life is precious feel. As such, unfortunately I must say that this server is really hard on the solo-player, althought it can be done.

In terms of going solo, you can level up to about level 5 that way... but it'll take a lot of effort. Once you hit level 4, xp drops off dramatically, and at level 5, you might as well give up trying to solo for xp... unless you're some kind of cleric.

CEP content... no word on that. Currently, the DM's seem to be putting their times and efforts into implementing the new crafting system that's slowly being introduced. One thing at a time I suppose.

Killing stags in the forests is just fine. Druids giving you trouble... are simply druids. They'll say anything to protect nature Just be mindful of murdering stags rampantly... you may run into some trouble over that.

Sending tells to party up is generally frowned upon I believe, even with few people on the server. I suppose sending tells to people to party up, assuming your characters already know each other, would be plausible... but not really.

It's unfortunate that you're on when no one else is. That's the one key weakness of any server... your time has to match their time... or a whole bunch of people in your timezone has to want to play there. Good luck finding that though... only epic level PvP servers are filled to capacity like that.
My 2 crowns about sending tells to each other for meeting up;

I can't see a problem with that specially in the times where few is on. Nobody is gaining from the 3 players on is walking seperately. It's about role playing and roleplaying is more fun when you are more then one.

When you meet up, just role play it as luck that you just crossed each other path (what would legends be without luck), and take it from there. Meaning: Role playing the meeting.

So I think you should go ahead, until the DMs say it is a no no, and if they do, just tell them, it was this punk here, that told you, and I will take the beating.

The meta gaming issue I believe is more related in the "I'm dead, come and rescue me at this specific area". That I'm very sure is a no no, and if not, still don't send tells to me about it, unless you just want to be looted.

I know several players on this server who are in Europe, and I know a couple who have left as well. Cyberpunk (Innuvindyl on the boards) and pcpaf are two I can think of off the top of my head. Though I know of UK players who have had a hard time with the server, I wouldn't say it's totally impossible for a European player to start here, though a lot of your gaming experience depends on when players are on.

1) You can try. You likely won't make it past level 3, soloing. The Vast is not a monster-slaying kind of server. and the creators have made it as hard as humanly possible to rise through the levels via combat. Levelling largely depends on DMs here, though I wouldn't say that either DM interaction or levelling is the focus of the server.

2) *shrug* See above. Not likely.

3) I don't really know how the DMs feel about this, but it's not against the server rules. I consider it meta-gaming and there have only been a few times I've done anything like it, in extreme situations where my gaming experience would crash entirely because of something someone else was doing. It's up to you how you feel about it, but I wouldn't make a habit of it if I were you...

4) The CEP is a long way off, from what I can see, and there's no word one way or the other yet.

5) There are potions available in limited supply. The 100gp healing is more useful for higher-level characters who have 50 HP they need healed or something. I'd highly suggest that in the very low levels when you can't afford potions, stock up on balmberries and make friends with a cleric.

6) Anywhere outside of town, really. Druids can't do much about it in town if they have any civility at all, but guards can, and they don't like drawn weapons. If you hunt too much, you might draw someone's wrath—this region is very much controlled by the doctrine of Chauntea and wilder nature gods (and their respective priests and druids), so the idea is to step lightly in issues like that.

Hope you like the server, and I'll see you around, hopefully.

Thanks a lot for the response, I shall be giving it a bash and hopefully it won't be too quiet when I am on. Also, thanks for telling it like it is and not say "ooh our server will be perfect for you, please play here"

Only my second day and I managed to get my character in jail for firstly hunting a stag in the town then accidentally killing an NPC who objected to me doing that . The blooming old man attacked me and my dwarf automatically fought back with his fists and scored a critical hit. Goodnight Vienna.

Just to say thanks to the player (dwarven guard) and the DM who dealt with that incident (heck I am useless with names). I really am okay with it if you decide my Dwarf should rot for eternity in jail. Also, I now know better, so this incident shall not be repeated

Which brings me to yet another point or two. I shall be making a new character since my first one is in the clink. Two things I have done with characters in the past that proved popular, but may not be suitable for this server.

a) selecting a race (eg dwarf, halfling) but making the character subrace human - (for runty/beardy/very young humans)

b) accents, I have a char I like to play who is based on someone from a book. He speaks English but uses the occassional Spanish or Italian word - I can see how that might irritate folks.

oh and third one...

c) a talking familiar?

Any of these leaping off the screen and filling you with horror at the mere thought of it?

Oi! Oi! - Fellow European...

Was nice meeting your dwarf...

Well, Ananiki has been soloing ALOT, not to my liking though, but as I think you saw, she is notone that makes friends in a matter of seconds.

It's hard to get past 3rd or 4th level, without DM 'help', but when I played with Innuvindyl, some of the old stable players were kind enough to let the DMs know that they think I did good, the DMs then watched me a bit and handed me some backward xp. Though now, I tend to stay up all night, so that I fit the US timezone

For the subraces, I think the answer is plain - No!
The server rules mentions each available subrace and for instance children are not legal...

Instead, put in your description (erasing the default) how your character looks, and special traits about him/her. That way we, as your fellow RPers, has a chance to pull up on this. (as an example, Ananiki has full scale tatooes on her arms and legs, though the model in itself only has some sparse ones. But putting it in the description, gives people an opportunity to say: *glances briefly over the half-orc girls wild tatoos*)

As for accent... well, I had thought about using danish for Ananikis homeregion language, but I think that it is actually a bad idea... instead use: "[homeregion language] You are a wonderful man Mr. X", this way we can all follow the RP and respond properly... cause, occasionally someone might know your homeregion language (you have to choose within the FR language set... take a look in the Character Bio section and general discussion for more on this).

Last. Personally I hate talking familiars, ie familiars that speak common. But I think that is all a matter of personal preferences, and I don't recall any server rule adressing this.

Welcome to the server from a other europe Player who plays a dwarf

1.: You can get to about lvl.6 with out getting RP xp. It takes a VERY long time and alot of work, but it can be don, and I guess you can get lvl.7 and 8 to.

2.: Yes.. as a Europe player you will be lonely sometimes, but if you are carefull then you will survive, special after lvl.2 depending of you charecter class. Just remember not to get to many xp from combat

3.: Its okey to send a tell to other players to hear where they are so you can join them. Just remember to RP meeting them.
Its okey with the DMs.
Maybe some players will not help you to find them this way, but most of us will tell you where we are so you can join the fun.

4.: no idea.

5.: The main reason for the low healing items on the server, is that we want people to be in partys when they leave towns.

6.: Kill the stags in town if you want. Just remember to keep it in charecter.

I hope you will have alot of fun on the server, I will try to help you with that If you need any help then just send me a tell or something.

Have fun
Note: Just because you -can- get to level 6 through combat xp, that doesn't mean it's encouraged.

As far as killing stags in town, I'd advise against it, unless your character has this terribly sadistic disposition against animals. You'll likely upset a number of characters. Try to limit your hunting to outside the town.

Yes, healing is expensive, therefore teaching you to a) travel in groups, b) make friends with clerics, or c) not go outside of town.

The CEP is an 'if and when.' There is a lot of unnecessary content in there (stuff not applicable to the Vast), and as far as the toolset goes, it's all very disorganized. Were we to update to the CEP, yes, lots of cool stuff would get added, and yes, AG would have a mammoth migraine trying to implement it properly. As it is, whether we ever go to it is in question, the answer to which is a long way off.

Ish.

hooray for Euro players.

One more little question about character creation and that should be satisfied.

I follow the skills, alignment and the stats of my chars with my RP. But see the classes, is it expected that a barbarian will be a chunky swordwielding brute, should a ranger be an individual who cares about the woods, does a rogue have to be a little scoundrel etc?

One character I used to RP had the skills & class of a rogue (except PP), but was actually a sailor and entrepreneur. There was nothing really roguish about him, but I just liked to play the class. Similarly I have seen witches/hags that had the class of cleric/sorceror/druid, but they were all RPed as being 'witchy' witches (hags of the woods). Is that sort of thing allowed. Or is it preferred that a character does what its classes say it should?

There, I am going to sleep now then work tomorrow, so thats at least 20 hours respite for you all

I have no problem with the sending of tells to arrange playing together. It is no different than calling your friends on the phone to come play PnP at your home. Please try to make the actual meeting in character (oh, hello, barbarian Bob, it's funny I ran into you here...), then go about your day. Also, please do not badger strangers with tells requesting they come play with you, or unsolicited party invites.

It's a large world that grows with nearly every build, and if you count on running into someone by chance, you will likely spend the entire time looking for them. Just get it over with if you want, and arrange to happen across eachother.

The one thinge we DMs do frown on is players sending tells to everyone else on the server to come join them when a DM quest is afoot. This sort of thing can put the screws to an arranged adventure rather rapidly.

This is not coming anytime soon, if at all. There are some key things that are wrong with the CEP that must be corrected before I will even consider adding it to the module.

The Vast is a land of hunters, and wild animals abound, hunting is central to the culture of the region. That said, as you discovered, weapons may not be drawn, much less used while inside of town limits. Local laws prohibit this.

If you run around slaying every stag in your path, you will not only upset the local PC druids, you may also gain the attention of the local NPC druid(s). Druids are concerned with balance, and understand that an abundant deer population is kept in check by predators, it is the natural order.

Humanoids are part of that cycle, but are also the most prone to upsetting the balance through greed and superior technology. When they push things out of balance, the druids tend to step in.

Well as for killing stags in town.......if a ranger/druid takes a stag into town, please take them out too. And dont leave them in the streets near death. Mars found one just north of harner´s farm a week ago, and had to put it out of its missery.
