Character feedback

Post by Krotha »

Id like to see what those players who have interacted with Viggo have to say about my portraying of the gnome, thanks i expect as much positive answers as negative ones, everything is helpful.

I like the "sniffles" stuff. Gives your character something unique to sort of hang your hat on, a bit like Rhistel's "Exquisite!"

However, having journeyed and conversed with Viggo a few times, I'm not sure what his motivations are. (Bear in mind two things here: I'm no expert RPer myself; and I don't read the character histories to keep my IC reactions pure). Why does he doe what he does? Particularly now that he seems to be dabbling in wizardry. Why would a gnome take up arms and fight as a melee soldier-type? And why does he take time away from that pursuit to begin studying the arcane? Why does he leave the Dale to adventure?

Another thing I noticed early in Viggo's career, but not so much lately: Seemed like sometimes you were over-emoting, actually explaining what he was thinking in the emote--which other characters would not be able to discern--instead of merely describing his physical actions or mannerisms.
yeah im slowly growing out of emoting thoughts...but i still do it sometimes and then think "damn". On the aims and goals thing, I should probably start writing his pre-Vast history so you understand him a little better

I was meaning to post something, but then I don't feel I know Viggo very well, but from what little I have seen, he seemed like an alright character.

I will say though that I don't find it odd for a gnome to be a fighter. I don't know too much about gnomes, but it seems like any race will need their fighters. Fighter (along with Rogue) is also a very generic class, it doesn't necessarily imply some philosophical outlook or lifestyle (like a monk, paladin, or druid class might). So I don't think that's really odd. If no other class really applies, I see fighter and rogue as the classes an adventuring character will "default" back to. Which one is determined by whether or not the character is tough or skilled.

As for taking up wizardry, gnomes have a fascination for magic, particularly illusions, so this does not seem out of place either.

So I think it's fine for a gnome character to default to a fighter (since he hadn't really yet given his fascination for magic enough heed to become a wizard) and then later have the fascination for magic and illusions surface.

How you spice that up may be what makes the character interesting, but it doesn't need to be extravagant.
Being of the gnomish persuasion I really like what Trooper said. Gnomes are cagy fighters using illusions traps and trickery to befuddle and confuse their enemies. Personally I have a problem mixing too many classes together but as far as a gnome character goes your progression is not too bad. Gnomes like to dable and experiment and try new things. As Trooper said, fighter and rogue are very generic cand can pretty much be used in any direction you want to go.

As far as motivation and direction goes, I could probably not tell you that for 95% of the characters in the Vast. Most of that is internal and comes out sometimes in small actions and conversations. Certain classes have a philosophical bent but the combination of gnome and the classes you have taken lends towards anything you want.

I personally like Viggo. Bring out his personality in tales and conversation. I would love to see him continue to grow.
