nomadic mage

Post by Dracharla »

I've been mulling over my new character for quite some time and I think I've figured out mostly what I want to play I am however still trying to figure out whether said character should be a sorceror or a wizard. I am basing them off a character from one of the many nomadic tribes that wander the areas surrounding the vast. My question is this. Would it even be pheasible to have a wizard come from such a setting? I was thinking that instead of dusty tomes and immense laboratories, information would be passed down and gained from scrolls of birch bark and runes carved into rock and clay tablets and bark and such.

I'm looking for other peoples ideas, on whether this is something that is reasonable as a character concept firstly, and secondly what other thoughts and ideas people can generate to help me flesh out the idea a bit further.

As such thoughts and suggestions are, or course, greatly appreciated!

Spellbooks take many forms, so the proposed background is not a showstopper. I would say that sorcs would be much more prevalent than wizards in that environment due to the limitations wizards have.

But ultimatly it's up to you and what you want to play. Your spell book could even be comprized of cryptic runes tatooed onto your arms..... After all, NWN doesn't even give us spellbooks to lug around. I'd think a little creative license in this area would be acceptable.

I agree with Reason on the notion that a sorcerer would be more apt to be a nomadic spellcaster than say a mage as we have come to know (stereotype) in the realms.
AN alternate view after thinking about it...

Perhaps would a shaman/Cleric be more in line with the nomadic view and the way you wish the character to handle thier spells and craft? Yet it may conflict with your current char, Isen for she is a druid ....hrmm *brow twitches*
My only points I should think are important are the feats and spells you choose and that they reflect what a nomad would need/use...

I had considered a cleric at first and thought about it for a while. this character is going to be human so that alone will be a striking difference. and While this character will have a deep reverence for her chosen diety, I want to avoid making her a divine spell caster, as a part of said dieties worshippers are arcane casters. I want to play out that aspect of it while keeping her an arcane caster. I'm perfectly happy playing a sorceror if my original idea seems implausible it just seemed a somewhat novel and interesting approach to take to it.

are there any subclasses or PrC's in 3.5 currently that serve as inspiration for this idea, Ryan?
Not really just, a thought I'd been rolling around in my head for a long time. I wanted a kind of primitive caster who wasn't innately gifted but wasn't a priest/ess either. This was what I came up with. I'm sure in one of the 10312502835238 D&D books out there there is a subclass/prc that is this, but I didn't see any of them

Although this was created before the time of sorcerers, how about the Savage Wizard kit from that DnD Link?

From the Complete Wizard book of www.coryj.net/CoreRule/

With numerious cuting...

Quote:
The Savage Wizard is the spell caster of a remote tribe, culturally and technologically primitive by the standards of the rest of the world. Although these tribes commonly maintain functional civilizations for thousands of years, their traditions, dress, and customs are so simple that most outsiders consider them unsophisticated brutes.

There are a variety of Savage tribes around the world, ranging from pacifistic societies of farmers and herders to bloodthirsty headhunters and barbarians. All, however, are sharply attuned to the natural world, sharing a deep respect for animal and plant life and an innate understanding of the mysteries of nature.
...
Most tribesmen are dazzled and impressed by magic, so the Savage Wizard typically holds a position of great power in his tribe. If not the actual ruler, the Savage Wizard is a respected teacher or tribal counselor. Depending on the nature of the tribe, the Savage Wizard is known by a variety of names, among them Witch Doctor, Mundunugu, Wangateur, and Isangoma.

The Savage Wizard's power can sometimes work against him, particularly if his tribe is exceptionally superstitious or if an ambitious tribesman schemes to usurp the wizard's leadership role. If the tribe becomes convinced that the wizard is consorting with demons or otherwise stirring up dark forces better left alone, they may expel the wizard from the tribe with the threat of execution if he returns. This is one way that a Savage Wizard might link up with an adventuring party.

In a campaign, the Savage Wizard takes the role of an outsider, baffled and intimidated by the mysteries of the "civilized" world. Products of technology, such as oil lanterns and crossbows, both fascinate and frighten him. While he is at home in the darkest jungles or most treacherous mountains, he is extremely uncomfortable in cities and towns. If the Savage Wizard is from a relatively pacifistic tribe, he might serve as the conscience of his party, questioning their eagerness to kill, their obsession with wealth, their selfishness, and their inequitable system of justice.
...
The Savage Wizard's Secondary Skill should be based on the primary occupation of his tribe; that is, if his tribe is mostly fishermen, his Secondary Skill should be Fishing. Other likely skills include Forester, Groom, Hunter, and Trapper/Furrier.

I would think that both wizard and sorc could work, although it is true a sorc would be better suited to such. But such a wizard could be their tribe's loremaster.

But a wizard from such a setting would be "very" different from your normal everyday wizard. For starters they would likely only try and learn magic that could directly benefit their tribe, Like Create Water, Mend, and Protection from the elements rather than something like Ghoul Touch or Detect Undead which a tribe would very unlikely encounter.

I thought I had more ideas than this... but perhaps it will be enough to give you more ideas.

Dracharla, sounds like you're looking at a shaman, similar to the Goblin shamans encountered on the Vast. IIRC, the class is listed in the DM's Guide (on the road on vacation now, so no books in front of me). They are capable of arcane spellcasting, IIRC. Also, if your character were an integral part of their tribe, why would they be in Dragon Dale? Did they break some taboo to be kicked out of the tribe? Where is their tribe? Was your character an apprentice to the old shaman/witch doctor/witch? I think 'Races of Faerun' has something on the Damaran and other tribes that make up the Vast, too. Sounds like a fascinating concept. Good luck with it.
