Spell Compendium: Visual/Perceptible Effects Descriptions

Post by TrooperMaxx »

I just recently picked up another D&D reference, entitled simply "Spell Compendium" and it's just that, a large compilation of spells from various source books (the standard spells of the PHB excluded).

Now nearly all of these spells are not present in NWN and will have no effect on the Vast, but one of the neat things it does is give a short flavor text type description of what the spell looks like or what it is like when being cast.

I'll take requests if anyone would like me to check if it has a particular spell and post its casting description. Just keep in mind that if it's in the Players Handbook, it's not likely to be in here, which is very unfortunate. I wish they had gone ahead and included the PHB spells. =/

Some examples:

Ironguts: You mutter the spell and uncork a bottle with a noxious concoction of scorpion vendom, toad sweat, adder venom, and the strained brains of carrion crawlers. The poisonous liquid evaporates into a black cloud that surrounds your hand as you reach out to touch the target. (the material component is a vial containing the diluted poison of four different creatures)

Quillfire: You evoke the power of nature, and the back of your hand bristles with a spikelike growth of quills.

Camouflage: Upon finishing the spell, your skin and clothing change color, warping tint and hue to match your surroundings.

I would take them more as examples than necessities.
Daily Double! *ding ding ding or whatever the Daily Double sound effect is*

Not only is it in there, but it is RENAMED!

What's the new name?

wait for it...

*drumroll*

Persistant Blade!

Yup, they seem to have shortened all the names of the spells attributed to a particular caster. If you ask me, all those lousy unnatural, balance-disturbing, power hungry wizards don't deserve credit anyway!

Anyway, without further ado:

Persistant Blade: You hold a dagger in your hand and concentrate on it, evoking the power of the spell. A duplicate of the dagger, made of translucent force, appears besides it and flies off at your command.

Ok, so maybe that was a little anticlimactic... I'm not even sure about the grammar on that one, but that's how they have it...

So I said daily double, so I guess I'll toss out another one... a better one...

Owl's Insight: As you cast this spell, your face is overlaid with the image of a snow owl. The image fades as you bestow your ally with comprehension.

See? Druid spells are much better. I think they even got the grammar right.
Meh. that's just ripped straight from DDO. normally im quiet about stuff like that but DDO is pretty much sour on my right now...

as for the shortened SPB to PB, i hate that when they take away from flavor from tradtional or new type DD/ADD spells. how many spells over the years have they edited/shortened/changed because one spell was for a specific campaign, yet to make it global, so to speak... i gets the edit gelding treatment?

Eagle's Splendor isn't present, unfortunately.
