The Postulations, Musings, and Observations of R. Liadon

*written in a smudged, hastily penned Draconic*

I, Rhistel Liadon, in the interests of furhtering the knowledge of the civilized races *scratch out* peoples of these lands of Faerun, hereby set down in writing the affairs, activities, and interactions and investigations of the *squeezed in before 'author'* hertoforementioned author in this journal.

This account begins on the morn of my departure from Aglarond. Though the community of half-elves which form that independent state were courteous enough to another of like ancestry such as myself, I did not find that land to be the

haven which I had previously envisioned. It was a place more of comfort and less of academia. And yet, like the hidden forest abodes of my father's kin, it did not provide me with the intellectual stimulation I have long sought.

Let me digress a moment in order that these introductory passages might better illustrate why I have relocated twice in
my young life. I admired the feats of my father's kin: druids and rangers of Silvanus, able to call on the support of
the animals or to command the very foliage *scratch out* fauna of the forest when need surfaced. It must have been a
magnificent sense of security for those druids: never alone, never abandoned, so long as their spells lasted. I was enthralled with their magics. Yet--and I hope that future perusers of this text might not see its author as sacreligious--I was not what one might call a pious individual. I did not look with favor on relying upon the whims of a deity to accomplish great things.

As the insightful reader has no doubt surmised, I began dabbling in things arcane. As I have mentioned much of the Art practiced in my homeland was of the Divine variety, so there was precious little I could gain from my family and their
associates. And yet, being of multiple *scratched out* mixed parentage as I was, I had little in the way of friendship or camraderie. Thus, I had made my way to Aglarond, the land of half-elves, hoping for collegiality and the prospect of scholarship among those who shared my legacy.

I spent two years there, and yet it was but the first few months in that land that had the greatest impact. A mage there of middling skill--his name, I am ashamed to disclose, has been replaced in my memory with more pertinent bits of
lore--showed me the passes, phrases and components necessary to conjure a small sphere of deadly acid--from nothing at all! Imagine! The power to forge a thing from nothing! It is a paradox in itself: a thing from no thing. To create! An exquisite notion! This prospect seduced me. And, as penned elsehwere, being a man of little faith in things divine, I had no scruples against what some would deem the "godlike" notion of creation. That, in addition to the summoning spells which I saw so frequenlty among my woodland youth, have led me to focuse my time, my energy, and each shred of currency I can obtain to learning in the College of Conjuration.

However, my growth became stunted in Aglarond. The mage *added above the current line* of the forgotten name *end add-in* was no Conjurer and had little desire to learn more on my accord. So, I left Aglarond because the vast majority of the arcanists their followed the Simbul *scratched out 'Simbul'* that land's sorcerer queen and focused their studies in the evocatory and transmutory colleges. I have littel interest in such magics. Indeed, I have eschewed the school of transmutation altoegether: Why merely shape the world that you can see when you can bring something wholly new into it?

Thus, I am leaving the half-elven cities and making my way to this land known as the Vast. I do not know how long my stay there shall be.

When there is nothing more to learn, I will take my leave.

*written in hasty draconic, barely legible*

An exquisite occurence! I have been in the town of Dragon Dale for but a few days, taking employment where I may to fund my researches, and I have been fortunate to meet another student of the arcane! I had begun to despair that these parts were comprised of nothing more hunters and furriers. Faylar *misspelled* his name was, one of the sun elves, if I am not mistaken, and a Diviner by trade. He escorted me thorugh the goblin infested towns to the south, showed me the Lycaeum Arcanorum--exquisite!--and showed me a scroll I had not previously seen. An evocation of ice, and yet so thirsty was I for new knowledge that even an evocation seemed like the finest aged wine! I must now return to my investigations. End.
Bah! A party of adventurers*scratched out* travelers made a foray into goblin lands this eve, and I was not even given a glance! Faylar himself was a leader of the expedition. I wished to display for him the "character" and skills, and yet I was left in the Wayfarer with nothing more dangerous than a sack of paper! Bah!

*written in draconic, on parchment that seems to have gotten wet and then dried*

I have had an exquisite time of it this day! I adventured beyond the borders of Dragon Dale again, this time through the forest and into the ranger camp of the Myhrrwood. We encountered moderate resistance from goblinkind--indeed, I slew one of the "vermin" (a term for the goblins my company seems predisposed to utiliizing) with a surgical crossbow shot. My opportunities for such combat have been few since leaving the forest glades of my father's kin. It was gratifying to see that I still retain some skill in hunting. Gratifying also was a practical use for the shielding conjuration I have been practising.

The camp itself is also a reminder*scratched out* reminiscent of my youth among the elves. As I sit here by the fire (my companions and some of the other fellows are discourses over some matter or another--I believe it has something to do with this preoccupation with the goblins) I am reminded of days spent beneath that great canopy. And I reminded also of why I left. There is precioius little learning to be gained here, other than the smell of unwashed woodsman *scratched out, replaced with* charting the descent of the odd falling leaf.

I do wish I had brought more of my books along! Alas, that in itself is a lesson*scratched out* has been my teacher this day!
*written in a scrawled draconic hand*

Much to report! A mundate deer hunt morphed into a foray into goblin caves. I was struck with an incantation of deadly means--a crackling energy ray that left me weaker than a newborn! The magic itself was exquisite, and--being that I know that spell mysefl--I now have first hand knowledge of the impact such a cantrip can have on a combat engagement *scratches out, then rewrites* engagement. I would have been out of the fracas completely were it not for a halfling with healing spells. Such an interplay of magic forces. I am doubly inspired to consider my studies!

Strangely--and this was certainly an unforseen occurance--I have found strange delight in using the weapon *marked out* crossbow I have carreid from Aglarond. I have slew several goblins with precise shots, though my arms burst eadh time I must reload the launcher. Is it simple nostalgia for the woodland hunts of my youth that makes me take pride in my marksmanship? I do wonder ...

*written in draconic, with smudged fingerprints scattered throughout*

This day a fellow spellcaster and I organized an expedition to investigate the flora of the region surrounding town *scratched out* the dale--specifically, the balmberry. Some discourse within the town had indicated the plants had not been as bountiful as could be expected. So! Research was needed, and Laser, two blades *scratched out* warriors, and myself ventured forth. We discovered, through a careful investigation of several test specimens, the berries were, in fact, ripe and full of color and texture. Even so, the academic experience was a satisfying one.

By way of postscript, I was able to summon a badger of dire proportions to aid us during a goblin attack *scratched out* ambush, but, alas, I could not sustain the spell and the creature scurried off into the wood. This has vexed me for several tendays. Though I can recite the incantion virtually as I sleep (for such time have I devoted to the spell) I am unable to maintain it for a suitable duration. *writes a curse in abyssal*! Perhaps the local mage, Roanna, has a solution, though I doubt it. My patience fails--to be able to cast the spell is exquisite, but I may only taste its fruits. What must I do to acheive mastery?! *another sentence is begun, but stopped short and scratched out*
*elvish, hastily written in the margins of the previous entry*

Have begun investigating *inserted in small print* potential *end insertion* candidates for the role of my familiar. Have seen the need for such a companion. This tenday day I observed four animals with the wherewithal needed to be an assistant to my researches. This does not exclude other candidates:

-toad: observed one in town, near wellyard
-bat: seen flying above town in evening
-small snake *scratched out* viper: traveled across path during patrol/research expedition with Valkeer, Nielan et. al
-raven: glimpsed a stately raven in a low bough of a tree during said expedition

Will continue to make inquiry into beast's physical attributes, mental faculties, etc. before attempting the ritual
*written in elvish, even more sloppy than usual*

I can barely contain my anticipation! I had an exquisite encounter today with a fellow named Mortis who once associated with a group of wizard--eight conjurers! Indeed, through error one summoned a fire elemental which took the poor Mortis's vocal capabilities and slew the majority of his company. He seems to be seeking revenge *scratched out* retribution against this Listera and--finding out my own scholarhship has focused in the exquisite college of Conjuration--has retained me to be a sort of adviser *scratched out* counselor in this matter.

We will be seeking out repositories of lore from the wizards--I believe he called them 'Mathan' (I shall have to check my notes) in the belief that this Listera might be seeking to bolster her own capabilites upon the learning of her *inserted* deceased fellows. I admit--the prospect of perusing the gathered scholarship of *inserted* eight conjurers is enough to send my heart into palpitations! What are the chances this Listera will even be found? More likely we will simply find the Mathan's tomes and scrolls--and what learning shall then ensue!

*written in draconic*

My absence from these pages has been conspicuous. This is due to the revelation of Master Mortis of a collection of lore in the exalted college of Conjuration, a rough plan to begin seeking said lore, and then the untimely death *scratched out* demise of Master Mortis near the gates of Dragon Dale.

This series of events conspired to reduce me to a state of melancholy for nigh a tenday. It is needless to scribe here that I was heartbroken *scratched out* devatstated at the loss of a source to such a store of knowledge.

At the same time, my efforts on the behalf of Master Mortis served as a distraction to my previous efforts to acquire and bind a creature of the wild to my service *lined through* companionship. A stint of several days at the ranger camp served to bolster my focus in that regard, as the place was teeming with the type of wildlife that I required for my observation--including the elusive owl, a noble creature in lore but a poor choice for a familar I have discoverd. The bird is too staid, too sedentary to be of service in my research. A brief synopsis of my notes thus far shall occur at a later date in these pages.

I believe i have left the doldrums behind and am refocused on my research. And yet I have not forgotten about Mortis's Mathan Wizards, or the conjurer Listera who survived, or the collected learning of those mages that has, for the present, eluded me.

*a wrinkled parchment, with notes squeezed in along the edges and going several different directions. The language is draconic. What follows is a general idea of the contents*

toad: strong creature, limited mobility
cat: quick but unpredicatable
owl: unobserved *scratched out* useful, but staid--need active companions
weasel: observed several; lacking in focus issues
bat: clever and quick; useful, yet sight issues pose a concern

*all of the above have been lined through or scratched out, leaving a single entry unaltered*

raven: stately, seems to possess a limited intelligence, flying useful

*the raven entry has been circled and starred*
*written in draconic*

My travails of previous tendays have been swept away by a cavalcade of prosperity! The ritual binding the raven to myself--we have determined to call the bird 'Coale'--was an unmitigated success. Already the creature is helping *scratched out* assissting me by maintaining a vigil over my spellbook while I am away or engaged in scholarship.

This most exquistive of events was followed by a rather harrowing jaunt into a goblin cave--but the rewards! My companions saw to it that I recieved nary a scratch*scrachted out* wound, and yet it seemed like the very hills emptied of the goblin kin--archers, footsoldiers, a bugbear which I saw from an uncomfortably close distance, even a savage spellcaster whom I slew with a conjured emission of frozen air.

My summoned dagger also proved useful *lined through* a boon in the fray when our party seemed greatly outnumbered. And my salary for this expedition was a plethora of magic scrolls--many of which I must devote dilligent study to in order to understand them at their fullest. Among them:

*an evocation of magical darkness
*an animal summoning spell
*an agressive sound-emission spell

I will be seeking a return--with all due security--to these creatures' lairs in the future, if this is the bounty to be expected!

*written sloppily in draconic*

I must confess shock at the current state of my academic interests: I have not devoted the requisite time to runescribing, philology, and arcane lore that is required to make great gains in rapid succession.

And yet I am satisfied *lined through* unperturbed.

I have been experiencing the exquisite joys of strategic combat.

Now, I am not so fool as to wander aimlessly beyond the confines of town, waiting for an orc *inserted above* or goblin to come along and assault me with sling and dagger. Nay, I have selected my battlefield carefully to ensure safety while still engaging in random encounters with beasts willing *scratched out* who do not shy away from attack: Rats.

A warrior might scoff, but it is of little concern to me. Coale and I have been polishing our mutual combat awareness. I provide him with armor, and--exquisitely--the raven takes the point and dives at the helpless rats, occasionally delivering a poison-like spell I channel through him. Coale is a bold and resourceful avian, I have learned. The rats, preoccupied with the storm of feathers and talons, barely notice *scratched out* are unaware me and my crossbow.

Situation: What if Coale is overwhelmed by the rodents? Do I conjure a splash of acid to burn the beasts? Nay! A more exquisite solution presents itself to the conjurer. Acid burns a single rat--a summoned, animated dagger can slay several! This is power!

Who would have imagined that martial acts could be so stimulating*lined through* exhilerating?

Postscript: Spell duration must be a focus of research. The dagger could not be maintained for the length of a protracted battle.

*written in draconic, weakly judging by the imprint of quill on parchment*

I have pledged to keep any railing against the rapscallions who call themselves priests for their utter fleecing of those in need by lording their powers of healing over the weak.

Now, to the matter at hand: Spirits, rotting corpses, living shadows--these things I have faced and lived to report, though it will be noted *scratched out* future historians will note that I only escaped with my life by the slimmest of threads.

Two dwarves--Keldorn and another, whose name was likely not mentioned during our journey--the less-than-sociable Mace and a second priest, and Viggo the gnome trekked north to a ruined town known as Algorah.

Though there was clearly some debate *lined through* disagreement among the dwarves and other companinos about the suitability of this site as an archaelological expedition (which was, of course, my primary interest), I shall move quickly to the crux of the encounter.

We were barred from leaving by *inserted above* truly exquisite conjured flames which sealed our retreat. We were beset on all sides by hordes of the unliving--several of which fell to my growing power. Conjured arrows tipped with acid slew more than one walking carcass, while the dagger I summoned to aid us danced and darted and flayed skin from the creatures.

The others of my company fought valiantly *scratched out* played their part as well, but sheer numbers began to take their toll. A horrid creature raked my shoulder with it's claws and sent me into a paroxysm of stomach convulsions. I managed to return to the fray, using a wand of frost to keep the approaching undead at bay.

And then the most exquisite thing happened. A shadow peeled itself from the wall and passed its incorporeal hand through my chest--such a feeling of despair and loss! It was as if the very stuff of life was being stolen from me, and indeed soon my own small pack seemed to bear the weight of many stones. The battle ceased, and we retreated, but my state of being was not revived.

It seems clear that the attack was of the deathly arts *scratched out* necromantic in origin. Similar, perhaps, in style and form to the enfeeblement arcanism which is known to me. I have now taken a purely academic interest in my own state, which persists. --particulary given the robber-clerics of Chauntea who demand an exorbitant fee before their 'goddess' can deign to heal. . Listed below is documentation of my own physical conidtion in the days since Algorah:

Day 1: Tired. Nay, extreme fatigue. Lacking focus.
Day 2: Tired, weak. No appetite. Coale appears to be feeling the effects as well. Unclear as to whether the raven's condition is physical or empathetic in nature.
Day 3: Tired. Mouth dry. Suspect heartbeat has slowed to sub-normal levels.
Day 4: Tired. Confirmed lethargic heartbeat through series of timed counts. Thirsty, and some appetite returning.

Again, for the sake of posterity, I shall continue to record these and other exploits, in the interests of the academic pursuits *scratched out* advancement of future ages.
*written in draconic, clearly rewritten from a draft copy due to its lack of errors or scratches. There are stilll several smudges*

The current state of the researches of R. Liadon:

1) Excercises in the Exquistie College of Conjuration: Progress is notable. Conjured acid-tipped arrows have been utilized to great effect in numerous altercations thus far. Successful in increasing duration to many spells, including the armor conjuration and animal summons. Perplexed that similar principles of spell duration do not apply to the summoned dagger spell. Hypothesis: An innate flaw in the arcane formula postulated by Master Shelgarn.
Prognosis: Further gains expected.

2)Philological Research: Now fluent in Netherese. Loross proving more subtle and challenging. Lack of availability of texts on the latter a barrier to further progeress at present. Shifting focus partially to the tongues of the elemental planes.
Status:
Auran--fluent.
Ignan--building proficiency in basic vocabulary and constructs of grammar.
Aquan--rudimentary vocabulary only.
Terran--no research conducted at present.
Related note: Coale has acheived sutiable proficiency in draconic.
Prognosis: Further gains expected.

3) Archaelogical/Architectural: Side projects, interest piqued in subject during recent regional expeditions.
-The Myrhwood Ranger Camp: Head of statue (subject: unknown) investigated and documented. See attatched diagram for more &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp information. Hypothesis: Orc-craftsmanship, dating to the time of the Empire of Vastar. Further Hypotheis: Statue of Orc deity or warrior-hero. Greater archeological record necessary to confirm/disprove hypothesese.
-Algorah ruins: Defaced statues near gate entry. Subject: unknown. Origin: Unknown. Simple sketch of the monument was made prior to assault by legions of undead. Further research &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp subject to security concerns surrounding the site.
Prognosis: To be determined.

4)Personal Affliction: Documented biological, physiological and psychological effects of confrontation with a sentient shadow. See attatched notes for full data report. Overview: extreme fatigue, decraeased appetite, cooled body temperature, sluggish reflexes, general apathy toward the daily functions of life. Note: The effects appear to be similar to the Ray of Enfeeblement spell in my own personal spellbook, though with increased severity of symptoms.
Addendum: Affliction now eliminated after payment of sizeable sum to healer at the river landing.
Prognosis: No opportunity for further study at present.

5) Necromancy in the Region: A proposal for further research.
Facts in question: Thrice, in my meager forays beyond the walls, I have personally encountered magery of a necromantic nature. 1) In a goblin cave, weakening spell cast by what was believed to be a shaman 2) At Algorah (see above) 3) On the south road, where I was on the fringes of a confrontation between a party and numerous walking dead.
Three different locations, three (apparently) different sources of necromantic power.
Problem: No one in the Dale or in Vesper landing with sufficient knowledge in the college of Necromancy to properly assess the level of this threat or provide an explanation for the prevalence of necromantic aptitude among the denizens fo the region.
Further problem: Some members of the aforementioned community openly hostile to studies of things of a necromatic nature.
It is clear to me that research into that particular college might bear fruit in any struggles against such powers. However, given the mindset of many in the Dale, such efforts would likely be unwelcome.
Hypothesis 1: Conduct research in secret. Would likely only cause more suspicion.
Hypothesis 2: Persuade others of the necessity for the study. *this line is circled*
Prognosis: Dependent on mindset of the populace.
