Just a few questions about subraces and such...
Hi,

First I'd like to say: This is a great PW server, one of the best I've been to in while.

I just read the rules and whatnot, and I have a few questions.

What is the description/modifiers for "Moon Elves" and "Sun Elves" (they aren't listed in my D&D Monster Manual). Your rules state that those subraces (along with Wild and Wood Elves) are "supported," does this mean that the unique ability modifiers (ex. Wild Elves +2 Strength, -2 Intelligence) and the unique favored classes (ex. Wild Elves, Sorcerer) are done or just that we can use the subrace name but it's basically just an Elf?

Also, how does the Deity system work, in that, should we generally try to pick one of the Vast deities or can we go with any D&D deity, even lesser known ones (ex. Shevarash) and can we go with Olympian deities (ex. Artemis) or Phaeronic or Asgardian ones.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In my experience, the ability modifiers for subraces are in... but I don't think you can change favored classes, so those are not in.

In regards to the dieties, pick any from the Forgotten Realms pantheon.

One thing you should know about subraces. The ability modifiers don't apply until you've 'spawned' on the Vast server. I play a Sun-Elf wizard, and during the player character creation process, it applied the +2 dexterity and -2 constitution bonuses for Moon-Elf then. I had to make sure that I had allowed for the loss of two points of dexterity once I was in game. Also, at character creation, my Intelligence was 2 points short of what it would be as a Sun-Elf, so I didn't receive all skills due. I lost four skill points then. Finally, when I log back into the server, I often end up with a blank spell slot, due to the sudden increase in intelligence when the sub-race is applied. Not a major problem, but I do have to rest every time I log back on to get that extra spell. This is apparently due to the fact that the HardCore Rule set is running on top of Neverwinter Nights and being applied once logged onto the Vast server. I'm happy to be able to play as a Sun-Elf, so it's not big deal to me.
Oh, yeah... I forgot to mention that significant little factoid. It's been the bane of a few of my past characters, too; thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for your responses.

Well, that would be kind of unfortunate, but I agree with you goatjager that it's probably still worth it for the Subrace.

I think I'll go with a Wood Elf or Wild Elf ultimately. Now to go and research them

Re: Just a few questions about subraces and such...
Because of the way NWN was built, altered abilities have to be applied as permanent effects to your character after you join the server. (Races and abilities are hard coded into NWN). Unfortunately this means any extra skill points you would have received because of an increased intelligence also cannot be applied.

The adjustment to favored class applies to xp penalties for multiclassing, and is included as part of the subrace package.

Moon elf is the standard default elf in NWN (it will appear just as you create it in the game). One thing to keep in mind when playing wild and wood elves is their reclusive nature, please research this thoroughly.

Also, if your scores fall below 10 (below average) because of these adjustments, please remember to play that score appropriately. (An intelligence lower than 9 leaves you unable to speak properly. Low charisma scores make you unappealing in some, or many ways to most people. Etc.) We see a lot of nerfed charisma and intelligence scores, and very few of them are being played. If you plan to have one or more of any score below 10, you should be prepared to play those scores.

Re: Just a few questions about subraces and such...
Yeah, I read over the descriptions in my Monster Manual, thought about it, and concluded that they are indeed not exactly what I had in mind for my character.

I ended up going with a Silver Elf (Moon Elf).

Will Bioware be adding support for alot of these subraces in HotU? Or only a few (like Drow)?

Re: Just a few questions about subraces and such...
Technically speaking the only two subraces that are part of the NWN core programing, at least from what I have seen so far without the aid of any mods, are the Drow and Duergar subraces.

If a person were to select elf or dwarf and then go to subraces then you can type in the race, starting with a capital letter, and the game would recognize you as the chosen subrace and would adjust your skills accordingly.

One special thing about Drow and Durgar is that they have the uncanny ability to blend with the shadows and be stealthy no matter what class they are which is a definate plus and adds to character depth.

I will be trying to accomplish this in this server but I doubt it might work since a lot of default settings have been turned off apparently. But nevertheless it would turn out fun to play a Drow or Duergar in this mod since the evil behind most of the troubles is mostly of Drow nature.

If you read the server rules, you will see that both drow and duergar are not allowed as playable characters. The appearance of any such races must be treated strictly OOC by all players and DMs. This means they do not exist IC, and the player should be informed of the server rules in an OOC manner - all IC role-play should temporarily stop at this point. All known disallowed subraces will also be deleted from the player's server vault.

The biggest reason for this is that these denizens of the underdark are insanely evil, and are some of the storyline enemies on this server. Only DMs will be playing these races, and they will be played true to their despicable nature.

More on the subject of Drow and Duergar...

It is a shame that AG has included that in the rules because it would have been fun to play a Drow or Duergar Defector that is being chased by his own kind or does not agree with the stablished societies.

I know that regardless they will be considered outcast in both their homelands and in strange lands specially by other Elf, Dwarf and Human races.

Not only that it would have been interesting to see half breed of those races. But the rules are the rules.
It might be.. but the problem is that there's a lot of people who would want to play such a character. And there's so few good-aligned drow/duergar as compared to evil ones (I guess in the case of drow that there are followers of Elistraee, but they're still extremely low in numbers). It would actually be really hard to play a good-aligned Underdark race, not least for the fact that 99% of other races would kill them on sight, nevermind shun them.

I think it would be fun to play a typical evil drow character, personally. I've developed a slight obsession with drow lately (I think it's come from reading R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books), and I find their society quite interesting - the whole 'chaos hidden under a pretense of law' way of life that their cities have, which you see especially in 'Homeland'.

But, off of my tangent, there's really no place for a PC drow/duergar character in the Vast, even if they were to be allowed. Evil-aligned characters have a hard time on the server as it is - one that was instantly recognisable as an evil race would have an even tougher time of it, I think.

This is so true. It could be way out fun and that is excatcly why AG (and I will included myself here to) don't allow drows and other evil subraces here.
Hmmm, why can't that be then, if it could be so fun? Becauce everybody would play them. I have already encountered a couple of drows on this server and on the servers I used to play on, and everyone of them were an outcast (I call it Dritzz-clones), which is so rare. The good drow is one to a million. If everybody would play them as they used to be, I'm sure rules like that could be change (at least when they are not one of the mayor plot villians on this server). If we had let's say just three player, playing the good drow here, I would think, that the scare factor the drows have, would be reduce a lot.
And playing a drow as it should be playing, would IMO not be fun at all. You won't have time for roleplay, when Thurgrin (and the rest of the community) is hunting you all the time.

If you want to play an outcast, or someone the society don't like much play the half-orc (a small reminder to everyone else, that half-orc shouldn't be too well-liked, until they at least have proven their worth. But it's up to you as a roleplayer of course).
