Lawful good players, something to consider.

Post by Dabaro Viloufin »

Just thinking out loud here and would like to see what your PC would do if they were LG and came across a situation where you had to make the decision.

You decide:

A10yr old has been seen stealing food, stealing is a crime. Majority of crimes means you sit in jail. The 10 yr old pleas that he is just trying to find food for himself and his sister which are homeless.

What will be the fate you decide for the 10 yr old?

a) Slap on the wrist
b) Feel compassion for the 10 yr old and let him go on his way with a warning and offer him a few gold for food.
c) Toss him in jail.

I'm curious to see what you all would do, I only ask that nobdy put down an explanation just yet, just choose A, B or C.
Bit of an edit, I know the choice I would choose and am pretty confident it is the correct choice from the POV that is stated above.

I see that most people are choosing B, but I really don't think that meshes with the lawful good alignment. I think a slap on the wrist is probably more in tune with that alignment. A lawful good character would at least reprimand the child and tell him or her that stealing from other people makes them go hungry as well and isn't right, no matter the reasons behind it.

That's why I tend to choose Neutral Good as opposed to Lawful Good. It seems to me that most people who choose Lawful Good tend to play them as more Neutral Good anyway. Of course, in "real life" there are a lot more than 9 choices for the alignment of your character, so roleplaying based on a stricter alignment system doesn't always work...unless you're a Palidin or similar class

Clearly B in my book. As I see it, a warning is a slap on the wrist.

d) Offer the child a chance to earn money to pay for the food stolen, and make things right with the people the child stole from. Show the child a better path to follow, such as learn an honorable trade (apprenticeship, etc.). The child deserves the chance to choose to become an honorable person.

Theft is still breaking the law, no matter the reason. The law is there to provide a fair deal for all peoples. At least, that is how I see Karn, who wasn't always lawful or good, acting upon this situation.
Well, given the options above, the answer should be C-Toss him in jail. Taking the B or A option promotes a chaotic action and thus gives you X amount of points towards chaotic. Now giving them coin to help them out will earn you points towards good, but law is law. Stealing is a crime and the punishement is jail time, regardless of who or what age you are.

Now if there were a means to help criminal activities and the laws were less harsh, goatjager option would definetly be a way to go. However, I would think even as a LG PC, you would still have to place the person in jail for X amount of time then afterwards a rehabilitation 'program'.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't throw the kid in jail. If it was a grown man, that's a different story though. Generally, children are exempted from those kinds of harsher punishments because of their poor judgement at times. I think a lawful good character can definitely be obeying the law without putting the kid in jail (depending on the specific circumstances). Making the child earn money to pay for the stolen goods was what I was originally thinking a "slap on the wrist" would be.

also, a person is not simply LG, they tend to tend towards good or law, so if one were good, but very adamant about law, jailtime, if one were lawful, but very adamant about good, gold and slap on wrist....

Timo, I think your option is LN, where the law is the only thing. LG recognises that the law is important, but only if there is justice. A clear difference in my book.
I think the action you describe Timo is more twords the LN or even LE side of the Law spectrum. While all three respect the rule of law they do so for different reasons.

I think the only "judge dread" automtically throw the kid in jail type would be LN. In that i mean to me LN is the only lawful alignment that would interperting the law without bias of circumstance.

A LE person may throw the kid in jail to or if it is advantageous for them in some way they may not, as i think they percieve Law as a protection of them selves and their property and a frame work for personal advancement or to be at times used as a weapon against their enemies. For instance a LE person may not even report the kid if say he didn't like the person who owns the stand the kid was stealing from, or if he saw some advantage to be gained with the kids family by holding it over their head.

Now a LG person in my opinion would try to help the kid out. LG is the most likely to think of what is best (good) for the kid involved, and try to show them the error of their ways and help them out if they could. Now if the kid was a known theif or had been in trouble before that would also weigh on the decision. Law is very important to a LG character without doubt but only if it benefits the good of society.

The above is just my opinion. :)

sorry if i got a little wordy, its late and i am typing tired.

my two cents

This is kinda long and drawn out.
LG...
Lawful: the law has been broken and there must be a consequence
Good: Compassion will play a part in this.

Lawful good character, quite probably a reputable person in the community, gives child stern warning about the evils of stealing, returns bread or whatever to rightful owner along with compensation for any discomfort caused, out of own pocket. He then takes and feeds, child and child's sibling. While eating he explains that the child will reimburse LG character by doing odd jobs for him. A portion of the value of these services (brushing LG characters mount, feeding animal companion, helping at forge or craft table, polishing armor, whatever simple and reputable task LG character sets before child) will go toward paying back what LG character invested until repayed. Remainder goes toward feeding child and child's sibling, seeing to their education possibly, and any beyond that goes to the child him or herself. In addition to this child may eventually earn a recommendation to apprentice somewhere. LG character carefully explains that the child is free to refuse and go back to larceny, but that this act would force LG character to turn child over to law with not even a recommendation of leniency.
